Foreign companies interested in Sudanese oil : Official

KHARTOUM, May 01, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The Ministry of Energy and Mining has disclosed that there were very many companies which have presented applications expressing their interests to invest in Sudanese oil.

Officials refused to disclose the names of these companies and their countries of origin until the peace talks are concluded and a final agreement signed.

The secretary-general of the Ministry of Energy and Mining, Omar Mhamed Khair, told the Sudanese Media Centre that oil revenues last year reached 200b dinars. He said 10,000 tonnes of petrol have been exported to neighbouring Ethiopia since last year.

He further said oil had been discovered in new regions south of Hijlij and Al-Jabalayn.

The secretary-general down played the impact of OPEC’s resolution to lower oil production and maintain current oil prices.

He said this will be of positive impact on Sudan, pointing out that the ministry had not yet undertaken any procedures towards joining OPEC.
