Southern army dismisses arresting member of SPLM-DC in Upper Nile

By Ngor Arol Garang

June 6, 2010 (TURALEI) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) has dismissed allegations linking it to the arrest of a member of parliament in Malakal, the capital of Upper Nile State.

SPLA Major-General Kuol Diem Kuol
SPLA Major-General Kuol Diem Kuol
General Kuol Deim Kuol, the Spokesperson of the SPLA told Sudan Tribune on Sunday that he hasn’t received any information that the SPLA forces have entered Malakal to arrest members of the SPLM-DC.

“I don’t have information that our forces have arrested members of any political party anywhere in the Southern State of Upper Nile let alone arrested members of the SPLM-DC,” said General Kuol .

He added that Malakal is under the jurisdiction of the joint-integrated forces (JUIS) not the southern army, hence, they cannot make any arrests without the approval of the JIUS.

“In the military system, forces under different military command cannot enter territories under a different command without the approval of the commanding forces. Therefore, allegations that our forces have entered Malakal to arrest members of a political party are fabrications intentionally coined to tarnish the image of the SPLA forces,” he explained.

General Kuol added that they do not have any forces in Malakal.

General Kuol was reacting to reports suggesting increasing tensions in Malakal and a statement by Edward Anthony Nyawello, the chairman of the SPLM-DC in the state that the SPLA soldiers have in the past kidnapped officials belonging to his party.

Chairman Nyawella stated that a member of parliament, Mustafa Gai, was taken from his house on Saturday 22th of May 2010, at around 1 p.m. and his whereabouts remain unknown.

“He was arrested with other members of the SPLM-DC as part of ongoing arrests of our members in the town” said Chairman Nyawello, adding that Dr. George Udhonh and Odheil were also arrested along with their driver on Thursday citing evidence that the SPLA was involved in these arrests.

“They are SPLA soldiers because they were in vehicles with the SPLA logo and captives were taken to the SPLA headquarters and one of the people arrested with them was from Radio Malakal , he was released later after they realized that he was arrested by mistake and he came and told us that they were arrested by SPLA soldiers,” he explained.

He confirmed that people are arrested at night at gun points and this is why a lot of people are missing.

“We don’t know about those who might have been picked up from outside Malakal town because some residents have been telling me that some people come at night knocking at their door, but since they refused to open the door, they didn’t take anybody,” he said.

Chairman Nyawello stated that the police cannot do anything because those who are doing all these things are very well organized with military cars and there are some military officers behind this thing.

One of his colleagues and a neighbour, Dr. Dulo was picked up at night by people who knocked at his door with covered faces.

The whereabouts of these people are unknown seeing that some of them have been missing for over three weeks.

However, Colonel Isaac Chol, head of the investigation department with the police in Malakal town equally dismissed allegations involving SPLA forces in the arrest of political members and residents of Malakal.

“I have never received any report or complaint that forces belonging to the SPLA outside Malakal have entered to arrest any political members here, never at all,” he said.

He however admitted that there were a group of unarmed youth he referred to as job- seeking youth whose members have already been arrested recently. According to the Colonel, this was the only cause of insecurity in the town; they were neither members of the SPLA nor members of an organized force.

Let this Abyei SPLA Spokesman keep on denying the truth, but one day he is going to answer for each blood of the innocent SPLM-DC members and others spilled by the shameless SPLA in Malakal, the Shilluk Kingdom and elsewhere.

Those who are dominating and controling the Army Headquarters in Malakal are SPLA even if they are named to be JIUs. There is nowhere in Southern Sudan where you can find a Joint and Integrated SPLA and SAF. Each of these armies live separately even when side by side with each other in some towns.

General Kuol Diem is a perpetual liar who shall be punished by the people if not God in near future. The rope of lies is shorter and the blood of the innocents is very hot to drink with a laughter!!!!

I have never seen in the whole world that an army of peace can go out madly to disarm the civilians who don’t possess arms, and leave those with arms to do their insurgence freely. But what happens when the shameless SPLA go out brutally to disarm the unarmed civilians of Southern Sudan in the Shilluk Kingdom and Equatoria, for example? Surely, the SPLA is telling them to arm themselves whether as arrow-boys or spear-boys or gun-boys so that they could get disarmed. This is South Sudan we would like to have under the bad rule of Salva Kiir and the cronies!!! God have mercy!!!! The up-side-down that the SPLM has done with democracy when its leaders went out to chose their voters (rigging) instead of voters coming in to choose them freely, is exactly the very up-side-down they are doing now by going out to oppress the civilians to produce arms from no where so that they are collected in the name of disarmament and exhibited in the SSTV as an excellent work.

The SPLA has been defeated in many battles by the real armed men in Southern Sudan. For example, this week in a village called Ogod, some kilometers north of Malakal town, the SPLA were badly defeated by some few gun-men who killed 9 from them. After the defeat and retreat the very SPLA went amok beating, torturing and doing other dirty things to the civilian villages in the Shilluk Kingdom that had nothing to do with those who defeated them.

The SPLA still keeps under arrest and torture in unknown location, some SPLM-DC members in Malakal (Dr. Odol, Hon Gai, etc.). They have also arrested inside the town the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) Director General of Greater Upper Nile, Lt. Colonel, Josephy Awan Nyikako, simply because he is nephew of Dr. Lam Akol, and because he opposes torturing and oppression of civilians in the name of false disarmament. Is this the South we shall have under the SPLM/A self-acclaimed liberators where the National Security Directors and other parties members (including MPs) are arrested without any charges, for opposing the evil deeds by the SPLA?

I think with this behavior from the SPLM/A, the bushes of Southern Sudan shall be rich of rebels against Kiir’s regime soon before or after the referendum (if it is going to take place at all). Very bad but it is a sacrifice to offer and a price to pay so dearly!!!

This report sounds rubbish to me. Why the SPLA has to arrest anybody? The SPLA soldiers are not the police. Lam got to stop his lies.

The said General Kuol Deim Kuol of SPLM from Abyei Dinka is either ignonrant of what his soldiers are doing in Malakal or otherwise he is a lier ans stupid. MP Mr. Mustafa Gai and Dr. Odol were pick-up by SPLA soldiers from Southern Zone of Malakal on the night of 22nd May 2010 from their homes. Their where about is not yet known. If Dinkas think they will subdue Shilluk like Jur Chol in Wau or Equatorians, let them forget it. The Shilluks will fight it to the last with Dinkas no matter what happens. In the last two days many Dinka SPLA mainly from Bahr el Ghazal lost their lives near Malakal. Kuol Deim should ask his commandars in Owaci west of Malakal.

For the Dinka Boy; disarmament is not equal to cattle looting by SPLA Soldiers in the Shilluk Kingdom. SPLA should be paid soldiers and what they now committing is not part of disarmamant. Dinka Soldiers are only subdueing the civilians.
