South Sudan Youth launch mass campaign for separation

June 7, 2010 (JUBA) – A mass campaign for separation of south Sudan from the rest of Sudan will be launched on Wednesday in the South Sudan’s capital, Juba, six months before the conduct of the region’s referendum on independence.

An overwhelming majority of the people of South Sudan are expected to vote for secession in the upcoming referendum to form their own independent state, according to a recent independently conducted survey.

The Southern Sudan Youth for Separation in collaboration with the SPLM You
th League and youth civil society organizations have announced that on 9th June 2010 will launch a mass campaign under the theme, ‘Yes for Separation’.

Speaking on behalf of all South Sudanese youth, the chairman of the SPLM Youth League, Akol Paul Kordit, who is also member of the party’s highest political organ, the Political Bureau, on Monday announced on South Sudan TV that the event will also be organized in all the ten South Sudan states.

This is to mobilize the people of South Sudan to vote for separation and create an independent country.

Akol explained that the people of South Sudan had lost millions of lives in order to achieve the right of self-determination through a free and fair conduct of referendum and determine their destiny of forming an independent country.

The prompted joint move by the South Sudanese youth leagues is seen as a direct counter-response to the recently reported concluded pro-unity agreement in Khartoum between the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and the northern dominant National Congress Party (NCP).

It was reported that the two parties had agreed to a programme for the next national government, directing the parties to persuade the people of South Sudan to vote for unity in the upcoming referendum.

The agreement, which was signed following the swearing in of President Omer Hassan Al-Bashir and his two deputies, Salva Kiir Mayardit and Ali Osman Mohamed Taha, was kept away from the public knowledge until it found its way to the surface through the media.

The two-page and four-point document was inked by the former Foreign Minister, Deng Alor Kuol on behalf of the SPLM and former National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), Salah Gosh, on behalf of the NCP. The agreement was received with suspicions and anger by the people of South Sudan.

The agreement came as a surprise to many political analysts and observe
rs who have criticized it as the work of the NCP to divide the SPLM leadership on the issues to do with self-determination and its two options of unity and secession.

“This agreement is a betrayal of the people of South Sudan, and in nutshell it was simply an understanding to rig the referendum in favor of unity,” said one observer.

Some senior SPLM officials had earlier warned that there should not be any directive or campaign about unity vis-à-vis separation, and should therefore be left to the people of South Sudan to decide for themselves in a free and fair conduct of referendum whether or not unity was made attractive for the last five years. Senior officials of the party have distanced themselves from the agreement, calling it a violation of the CPA’s provision on self-determination.

NCP has expressed its refusal to remain neutral on its campaign for unity and vowed that it would defeat separatists within the SPLM. President Bashir after his re-election victory publicly stated that his next campaign would be on the referendum to persuade southerners to vote for unity and that his deputy Ali Osman Taha would be stationed in the South to push for it.

There is another unconfirmed speculation in Juba that there could be another hidden agreement on security between the two parties, in addition to the pro-unity agreement on directive to persuade the South to vote for unity.

The planned mass campaign for separation by the South Sudanese youth in all the ten states however sends a strong message that will resist any pro-unity campaigns in the South.

The campaign will begin in Juba on Wednesday at Juba Football Stadium with a peaceful procession in the streets and end at the tomb of late Dr. John Garang de Mabior, where organizers will address the masses.

Akol added that such organized mass campaigns specifically mobilizing the people of South Sudan for separation will be conducted on 9th of every month until the time of referendum.

South Sudanese observers say the participation of the SPLM Youth League in the direct campaign for separation, despite the previous tone of neutrality and the recent pro-unity agreement by the same party officials, indicates differences in the party on how to handle the issue of unity and separation.

“That is a very big blow to the voices calling for confirmation of unity between north and south, unless through a mere rigging of the referendum results,” he said. They however warned that such a rigging of the referendum results would not go unchallenged and would more likely result to violent divorce between the two regions.

    Good move.

The future of the south depend on the youths.

We older people will only be backing them. But the elders in the leadership of the south must not make a mistake of taking a decision against the youths interest,in one way or another by been bribed to rig the referendum.

Some of us elders are just concerned with getting as mush money as is possible regardless of concern of the future of the youths. This is wrong.

    Dear Southerners

It is not shocking to read the news that Mr. Akol Paul Kordit is leading the “Yes for Separation” mass campaign for separation of south Sudan. In fact, it is in line with the SPLM’s double face policy and failure to honor the CPA that put them on the chest of the poor people of the South.

It has been well established that separation is a disaster to Sudan in general and to the would South state in particular – a curse.

Statement like “An overwhelming majority of the people of South Sudan are expected to vote for secession in the upcoming referendum to form their own independent state” is based on mere dreams. Those who prorogate for separation are short sighted and selfish. They work for their personal zeal for power and wealth on the expenses on the general public in the South. In their quest for their fantasy kingdom, they don’t care to ask the right questions or come up with the right answer to the pressing issues. The young generation is demanding answers to the development questions, corruption, separation consequences and status of their future role in the dream state. The youth should direct their efforts to find out vulgar facts for themselves, instead of blindly taking part in committing a crime against their poor people and their future.

Some of the questions that need sincere and urgent answers are:-
1.The prevailing political atmosphere in the South is suffocating and repulsive to any voice other than SPLM/A. Is this the way a new state is going to be formed? Every day the South is witnessing gun fire seeking change and justice. Are the political and military dilemmas have been carefully addressed? Or the South is going for sure to shed more blood? This time is Southern blood by Southern people.
2.Can SPLM be none tribal, so all the Southerners contribute building the new state? Can other tribes be respected and their confiscated properties and freedom be returned?
3.What are the economic and financial resources that can sustain the new state? If we just consider that the 12 Billion USD received by the GoSS from oil revenues has not been stolen or wasted – is this amount enough to build a state? Can any separatist guarantee that the international community will support the new state after the bitter experience of wasting the aids and assistances provided to SPLM during the last 6 years?
4.Are boarder issues resolved or we are going to witness a fresh war? Do we need one?
5.What is Mr. Akol Paul Kordit is going to tell the starved, the sick and the displaced that all your problems will be solved by January 2011? Can SPLA stop raiding the rural people and hand back their stolen cows and lands.
6.What is the fate of the Southerners in the North? Can the campaigners of this event provide answer to their need for housing, work, health, schools, universities and security?
7.Before all the above, can the GoSS convince the world that it does not violated the CPA all the way? Everything is under focus. Everything is known.
8.Is the West ready to support a new state in light of the current leadership and situations? The West does not care about us we Africans. It wants to make sure that its strategic and economic interests are met in full. Can SPLM/A meet the international standards to serve the superpowers? Let Mr. Separatist answer!

The above are just the most important issues. There are so many difficult issues to be addressed before referendum or war is inevitable; such as oil, foreign debt, nationality, civil service, international agreements etc. or pla pla pla.

Many also think that it is more wise to work for the unity at this stage and point of time and develop the human resources and infrastructure of the South. We firstly need to deal with ignorance, disease and poverty. We need to be democratic and none tribal to achieve that. The CPA as said by our beloved leader, the late Dr. Garang “is just a start to the New Sudan”.

Those who may take part (by hook or crook) in the undesired campaign for separation are planning to visit Dr. GARANG and Salute him. Can they listen to his voice and wisdom? Or he will be declared a traitor?

I know many separatists will not be happy with my view point, but they should be tolerant, democratic, cooperative, respectful, accommodative, decent, good and out-going to gain a state. They cannot otherwise.

We’re the ones who fought and therefore these corrupt old politicians who sell us and our land for money must be reminded that we cannot tolerate their evil anymore. We will go to each and every house in South Sudan to remind our people that they must vote for the separation of South Sudan.

God bless the South Sudan youth.
