Kiir re-appoints Machar as his deputy ahead of new cabinets
June 12, 2010 (JUBA) – The President of the semi-autonomous Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, has issued a presidential decree re-appointing Riek Machar Teny as his deputy in the new government.
Kiir issued the decree on Friday with effect from 11th June 2010. Dr. Machar has been the Vice President of the government since 2005 and was declared as running mate by Kiir during their April elections campaign which saw him re-elected to the Presidency.
Machar is also the deputy chairperson of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
Honorable Deng Yai in Juba said reappointment of Dr. Machar by the president today shows commitment of President Kiir to settling southern affairs with intellectual and academic advice.
He in reference to Riek Machar said the later is the right man in the right place. “I therefore call upon him to collectively and faithfully work with president Kiir as he has done in the past years for successful conduct of southern referendum,” he said.
The oil-producing region of south Sudan secured its own semi-autonomous government after the signing of the comprehensive peace agreement between the government of the ruling National Congress Party and the former rebel Sudan people’s Liberation Movement previously led by late chairman, Dr. John Garang who died in a tragic plane in July 30th 2005.
Kiir, who won an overwhelming April election victory to stay in power as President of southern Sudan, is also expected to name the rest of his new cabinet in the next few days, with seven months left before the plebiscite, due in January 2011.
The new government will face number of challenges ahead of the vote including drought, tribal violence and rebellions by at least three political leaders angered by results of the April elections.
Armed groups loyal to a political leader turned rebel against state government, David Yauyau reportedly kidnapped four government guards in south Sudan’s Boma wildlife park, close to the border with Ethiopia on Thursday.
The southern army said it had sent out a battalion to rescue the men and retrieve radio equipment stolen in the raid in Jonglei state.
Sudanese president, Omer Hassan Al-Bashir, is also expected to announce the country’s national coalition government very soon.

Nothing is new here to say congratulations to Dr Riek Machar. He and his supporters should not ignore to know that their political future lies elsewhere and not with Salva Kiir and his failing SPLM/A. It is said, political shits can take you up but it won’t maintain you there for long when the people you rule are not happy with your leadership. I hope Dr. Riek and his followers will get this message.

South Sudan and Southerns survive in the image of Riek and few other anti corruption leaders. Without Riek, Igga, Amum and few other ministers behind the image of SPLA ,by this time SPLA would be dancing in a jungle of nowhere. GOD be with my people.

Vice President Riek was elected along with President Kiir by the people. He was on the ticket that President Kiir ran on. So how can President Kiir repoints someone who was elcetd by the people?
Perhaps, Kiir’s Advisers should read the laws governing elections.
For instance, can Obama re-appoint Biden? no, because Biden was elected along with Obama on their 2008 ticket.
