U.S. special envoy holds talks on Sudan with Egyptian officials

June 12, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The presidential U.S. special envoy to Sudan Scott Gration today held talks with Egyptian officials in Cairo regarding the crisis in Darfur and the upcoming self-determination referendum in Southern Sudan.

The Egyptian state media said that Gration discussed with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit the joint efforts to maintain peace and stability in Sudan.

Gration told reporters after the meeting that his country is interested in implementing the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in Sudan and will work with the African Union (AU) and the international community “to ensure a free and transparent referendum”.

The U.S. official stressed that his government does not vouch for either choice but will respect what the Southerners choose and support it.

Sudan’s oil-producing south secured its own semi-autonomous government, and the referendum on whether it should split off as a separate country, in a 2005 peace deal that ended more than two decades of civil war with the north.

Egypt is concerned that a probable South Sudan independence in 2011 will further weaken its position with regards to the intense diplomatic battle it is fighting with Nile basin countries which is seeking to re-allocate water sharing accords.

Gration also met with the Arab League Secretary General Amr Mousa and briefed him on U.S. efforts regarding humanitarian and security efforts in Darfur as well as means to work together to achieve prosperity in Sudan.

Thank you Mr. Gration for pinpointing this fact to Egypt and Arab league that are working very hard both day and night to forge unity of Sudan for their own benefits and interests and has nothing to do with the interest and benefit of Southern Sudanese. If Egypt and Arab World were interested in seeing Sudan united in common, they should have told the oppressive regime in Khartoum to stop marginalizing the people of Southern Sudan and indeed put Islamization and Arabization of Southern Sudanese to dead stop right from the birth of South-North problem.Southern Sudanese had given them enough time to do this, but they miserably failed to help the unity of Sudan to prevail and they should blame themselves and not Southern Sudanese.

And in this case, the choice of the Southern Sudanese on determining their own political future comes 2011 is paramountly important and should not only be respected but indeed be fully supported. I hope the US-Government will maintain her position on the choice of Southern Sudanese henceforth.

You are loosing your time Gration with people who ahs nothing to do with the problems of Sudan. Egypt in its life has never ever initiated to resolve Sudan problems; conversely they played dirty role for Africans in Sudan to be oppressed by Sudan Arabs.

The robe is droped from the Egyptian hands after their Jalabas are loosing power in Sudan. Otherwise Egyptian should publically declare for the Africans that they are Pharoes.

Thank U.S. Government for working hard to ensure that South Sudan will conduct the fair and just referendum with help of the Obama administration. We South Sudanese are tired with the ugly unity that Khartoum forced on us. We can not and will not accept unity of intimidation, threat and forge. This time Southerners cannot be blackmail anymore. Too many agreement dishonored, too many lives have been lost. Enough is Enough. We cannot afford anymore lost. This is the only chance to take this golden chance. It is up to Southerners to decide destiny, the choice should not be directed by anyone. I would tell those who are advocating on unity to shut up their mouth, it is too late, too obvious.

Separation Oyee! Independent Oyee! South Sudan.

Thanks to US Govt for making its position clearer to Egyptain Govt and the Arab League.

Yes, we South Sudanese are not looking for Someone to make us choose our fate but to respect it. It is the same thing we want Egypt know that we want it to respect the outcome of the Referundum and stop manipulating the situation to meet its needs.

It is in the interest of the South Sudanese to have a peaceful region but this shouldn’t be mistaken with the compromise of thier fate. CPA golden protocol outcome MUST be determined but the South Sudanese in a free an fair election.

For us to reach this stage, we lost comrades in those jungule of Sudan. So it shouldn’t be undermined overnight for the interest of aliens.
