Sudanese president submits cabinet formation to NCP, swearing-in expected Monday
June 13, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir submitted to the leadership council at the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) his nominations for the new cabinet in the post-election government.
Sudan state media reported that Bashir headed a meeting today where he provided the list of ministers tapped for positions in the government. The parliament speaker Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Tahir also submitted proposal for heads of committees in the national assembly.
The NCP deputy Nafie Ali Nafie told SUNA that the participants reviewed the choices and gave its input but authorized the president and his deputies to make the final decisions.
Local media reported that Bashir will swear in the new government on Monday.
Bashir today issued a decree defining the presidential, executive and national organs and their functions and competencies. The decree defined the functions of the Presidency and the Council of Ministers and provided for the formation of a consultative council for every ministry.
The NCP won around 95 percent of parliamentary seats in the north in April’s elections, giving them more than the required two-thirds majority to make constitutional changes.
The former southern rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) won most of the southern seats, around 20 percent of the total parliament.
Bashir’s achieved an easy victory in an April election — he won 68 percent of the vote — that was marked by opposition boycotts and allegations of widespread fraud.
