New South Sudan ministers sworn in

By James Gatdet Dak

June 23, 2010 (JUBA) — The newly appointed ministers of the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) were sworn in on Wednesday in the ceremony officiated by the Southern Sudan Chief Justice, John Wol Akech, before the President of the semi-autonomous region, General Salva Kiir Mayardit, and his deputy Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

salva-2.jpgSeven other ministers out of the 32-member cabinet are yet to be sworn in because five of them were not present and two are yet to be appointed through nomination by the National Congress Party (NCP).

In his remarks to the ministers shortly after their swearing in ceremony, Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, urged the new cabinet to work hard in preparing the people of Southern Sudan for the upcoming referendum. “The referendum should be given undivided attention,” he told them.

Kiir added that the referendum should be conducted by the 9th of January 2011 without any delay even for one day. He told his ministers to work hard towards maintaining security and stability in the region, adding that any incidences of lawlessness and violence in some parts of Southern Sudan could be used by “detractors” as an excuse to delay the conduct of referendum.

He also warned the ministers against abuse of power and misuse of public funds, urging them to cooperate with the anti-corruption commission on issues related to the fight against corruption.

President Kiir reminded the ministers of the need to seriously and effectively fight against corruption, which he said, has found roots and gradually grown as a very big animal in the SPLM/A, right from its early years of inception as a liberation movement in 1980s.

Kiir also warned the ministers against unnecessary frequent travels away from their offices, saying his office will not tolerate it this time and urged them to deliver services to the people.

His deputy, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, on his
part also urged the newly sworn in ministers in the new post-elections cabinet to interact with their staff in their respective ministries, know them and learn from them as technocrats.

Dr. Machar, who congratulated the ministers on their appointments for win
ning the trust of the President, reminded them of the challenges ahead that require team work as Southern Sudan referendum approaches.

He said the Government of Southern Sudan is the steering wheel of the popular opinion of the people of Southern Sudan, saying many of the ministers will also be busy negotiating the outstanding issues in the CPA.

He further added that it is most likely the people of Southern Sudan will vote for separation and result to the split of the country into two independent states.

Dr. Machar further reminded the new cabinet that the people of Southern Sudan have suffered for a very long time in the struggle for freedom, adding that there is need to settle their political destiny so that the situation is not transferred to the next generation.

New South Sudan ministers sworn in

    Dear Readers,

Yes, “there is need to settle their political destiny so that the situation is not transferred to the next generation”. Very true! If the Referendum leading to south sudan independence is not correctly resolves to the wish of the majority opinion on January 09, 2011, there will be a generation war like the last 50 years in sudan.

It is better to be independence now, rather than later. It will save time and so many lives in sudan. People need to get this into their war-monger heads in both south and north of the country.

I am personally impressed that all our leaders understand the suffering of people of Southern Sudan. Enough is enough, no more unity, separation is the way forward. We are not animals, we are people of the rich nation, South Sudan. We cannot be intimadated or shall we be forced to accept this ugly unity. The time of blackmailing has gone.

Thank to newly sworn-in ministers, Mr Vice President and the President of the South Sudan Government for getting on through with the political storms and environmental climax of the recent elections. We are happy to receive you in the positions won and warm welcome to serve the southerners.

Pointing out the stone and tiny sand in someone else eye and leaving big clay soil on your face!!! I believe the corruption that the president referred to in his speech started from the first day in which the south Sudan presumed the leadership just after the signing of CPA. I doubt if there was anything to corrupt from the geneses of the SPLA struggles known as 1980 to 2004. We the common men during the struggle could not managed to see if there was corruption instead things were only sorghums and mazes. Except might be the big people in the struggle were knowing how to do it at a time whereas they common-men who were just ordered to fight stayed in the blanket that was placed on-to by the cleverest ones.

“The need to seriously and effectively fight against corruption, which he said, has found roots and gradually grown as a very big animal in the SPLM/A, right from its early years of inception as a liberation movement in 1980s”

I agree the with Mr Vice President statement that there is need to settle this political destiny so that the situation is not transferred to the next generation.
Indeed we need the next generation to enjoy rather than fighting for the freedom we may later fail to provide. That means let not pull others back for tribal politics when they are facing Arabs. The mistake of one southerner will be soon counted on him/her.

Some of the ministers appointed did not even win elections in their own district. How did they ended up being appointed? These are just a bunch of crooks draining the resources of our South.

Kiir should cease from talks that are never accompanied by actions. Most of his recycled minsters are individuals with outdated knowledge and irrelevant experience, which do not help promote effective service delivery, but huge hurdles. It is understandable that majority of these minsters got themselves apponited not because of their qualification merits, but because of huge threat they pose on referrendum outcome. Some of these minsters if not all of them are a well known political prostitutes who since they entered in to politics, have never wherever possible hesitate to put their personal interests above public’s interest. The recent post election crisis, which saw senseless factional coup was a perfect showcase of this type. Kiir in his inaugural speech should have strongly reminded these crooks that their days of corruption with impunity are coming to an end. Otherwise I wish Kiir’s leadership at this critical time God’s blessings.
