JEM rebels say Sudan refuses to facilitate release of POWs
June 27, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) accused the Sudanese army of refusing to facilitate the transfer of some 12 Prisoners of War (POWs) captured during last week clashes in South Darfur.
He added that four prisoners suffer gave injuries while two soldiers lost their life due to their wounds.
Sudanese army and JEM rebels clashed at Um Katkout, 110k south-east of El Fashir and 90K from Nyala on 22 June. Both sides claimed inflecting heavy causalities on the other side.
The rebel official said a delegation from the Red Cross met Sunday in Khartoum with the Sudanese army but despite the urgency of the situation the military leadership pledged to give their response with 48 hours.
Jamous said the Sudanese army of refusing the transfer because “it proves the magnitude of losses in the ranks of the army”. He however urged to save the lives of the four injured soldiers adding any further delay threatens their lives.
On 9 June, the Red Cross facilitated the handover of 35 prisoners of war from JEM to the Sudanese government from Nyala in South Darfur.
The two sides resumed fighting last May as JEM suspended it participation in the peace talks accusing the army of violating a cessation of hostilities signed last February in Doha.
Since the rebel group refuses to return to the venue of the peace negotiations saying Qatar is favoring the Sudanese government. JEM demands to reform the peace process in a way to ensure its leading role in the talks.
It also asks to transfer the venue of talks from Doha to Tripoli, Libya where resides its chairman Dr. Khalil Ibrahim. The later was barred by Chadian authorities from entry to Ndjamena on 19 May.

That is a great job Suleiman Jamus,I salute and admire you for your work,however,you (The JEM) leadership needs to move away from ISLAMIST ideology inorder to garner international support and recognition as a genuine political movement championing the rights of DARFURI people.Your actions are far much better.You only lacked coherent ideology.Unite the people behind you and you will achieve your set out mission and objectives.
Khartoum government doesnot care about the welfare of their soldiers,they only use them as tools of war,but when wounded,they became useless to them,hence,became reluctant to simply facilitate the wounded POWS movement to hospitals.It clearly shows it is a government that does not put the interest of its people first.That was how our late leader,John Garang used to do when he released a brigade of POW,mostly comprising of Darfur nationals when they were misled by ISLAMIST ideology of wanting to islamise the Sudan by force.
