Hundreds of traditional leaders discuss insecurity in Lakes state

By Manyang Mayom

June 28, 2010 (RUMBEK) — Over one hundred traditional leaders from four counties of
Lakes state are holding a meeting over how to contain cattle raiding and
internal conflicts among their respective communities as well as with their
neighboring states.

Traditional leaders comprising of paramount chiefs, sub-chiefs and Gelweng youth
leaders from the Counties of Rumbek Central, Rumbek East, Cueibet
and Rumbek North will take three days closed door meeting.

Rumbek Central County commissioner, Dut Makoi Kuok, who is also
an organizer of the meeting, told Sudan Tribune that “the meeting is
discussing on three items including cattle raiding, cold blood killings
and neighboring states hostility toward our Lakes state”.

However, Dut Makoi acknowledged that internal robbery has increased in Lakes state with
people looted on roads. He said that this meeting will iron out
all expectations to be given solutions to ending all atrocities
committed through crimes.

“I have over 344 pending cases in court which involved cattle raiding
and murdering cases on judiciary crossroads – There is no speed
judicial procedures to prosecute the cases here in Lakes state. There
is no serious sentence being announced by our court for five years,” said Makoi.

“We expected this meeting to bring out some strong resolutions that
shall be executed and to be considered by our state parliament. Killing of
people and roads robbery become fashion in Lakes state which is not
our culture,” he said.

The newly appointed minister of Local government and Law Enforcement
Agency, Mabor Mayen Wol, ensured that his top priority is security
and stability. “I will prioritize the safety measures plan to achieve
health stage on insecurity stages which overwhelm Lakes state
government – I don’t need death in this term,” he said.

Furthermore, Lakes state governor, Chol Tong, has put security as top priority followed by development and delivery of basic services to rural areas.

Very good, during the war esp during the first half of the struggle,Lakes State was the most secure place in Africa, unfortunately, when the number of intellectuals who were not properly oriented on the SPLA/M objectives increased ,Lakes problems started, esp when they relied on their clans prestiges as a bases for getting employment. Now you Lakes intellectuals should devest yourselves from local issues that tend to divide people & focus on develomental issues, your cousins in the villages will emulate you.
