The Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS), Dr. Riek Machar Teny, on Saturday urged the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) to work on computerizing the upcoming voter registration process where each registered voter is given an ID card with his or her photo and finger print attached for easy location and identification during the voting.

This came during a meeting between the Vice President and a delegation headed by the UNMIS Under-Secretary for Department of Field Support, Suzan Malcorra. Machar said it was important to computerize the registration system so that it could minimize the chance of votes rigging and build confidence in the exercise in order to avoid repeat of the mistakes committed during the April elections.

He also briefed the Under-Secretary on the ongoing processes to form the commissions for both Southern Sudan and Abyei referenda.

The Vice President also briefed the delegation on the post-referendum arrangement discussions on issues such as oil, assets, liabilities, Nile waters, international agreements, etc. He informed the Under-secretary about the ongoing preparations by the Southern Sudan Referendum Taskforce, which he chairs and plays the role of assisting the referendum commission in preparing the ground for the conduct of the referenda.

On her part, UNMIS Under-secretary, Suzan, acknowledged the importance of computerizing the registration process but however doubted whether the remaining period to the referendum will be enough to allow for establishment of the system.

She also asked the government to present an official request to UNMIS outlining details of areas the region would need assistance on during the referendum.

Computerizing the voter registration is a brilliant idea. There is no doubt that the NIF turned NCP is secretly working day and night to undermine this historical right of self-determination. Sudan economy heavily reliie on the oil revenues from the South and it will be a big mistake to think that the NIF is simply going to let the South go like that.

The GOSS must be in a position to handle any last minute move by the NIF and those who are against the self-determination. Almost every South Sudanese have pinned their hopes on the self determination and derailing it comes Jan. 9th will be a huge mistake and possibly catastrophic for both sides. What Dr. Machar suggested above is one of the important scenarios that must be must in place to ensure smooth referendum outcome.

    Kulea,

The Goss demand the computer system that will conserved the acurracy of the voters registration. This idea is not news but to the Sudan so the Goss have to report it to make it easy for recognition.

Yes, some people like you always chase wind full of dust without proper examination. What do you mean when you say that without Riek Machar, there will be nothing. This reasoning is not that new to me because whenever you have no reasoning capacity, then there is no way you can understand issues.Born emty and will die empty is always you. you deserve it my dear.

Dr. Riek, that is an excellent idea, but time is essence here. Let the commissions be formed quickly and let us commence the registration as soon as possible. NCP likes the fact that time is speeding without Southern Sudan doing anything on their own referendum. They will captitalize on that fact. So let us move quickly to make NCP hopeless.

Thanks for the idea Mr. Machar,
What is important is not an idea alone but follow up of what is proposed makes it worthy.
I, personally from the begining have never thought of GoSS lacking those who can give better ideas but what is lacking is follow up of things and that is why some people think GoSS officials are failure.
If other issues of referendum are now being discuss to prepare the road map of its conduct then why is it late to computerize the registration? it might be late to train the staff but can’t be late to hire even from our neighbouring countries otherwise we have those skillful people who can do the work here in the South.

Lastly your idea will give you any image in the way it will end.
    Thanks.

it is a brilliant idea to computerzed voter registration but my question is.Do you have ample budget to carryout such a program?

will it be applicable for most of voters since the majority are illiterate? I would suggest we do it as we do the elections if we want sucess and free from slavery.

This is a good idea but remember the computer is programmed by human being.

Therefore, be careful if such proposal is taken into consideration especial during the programing. This is because some of the UNMIS staff who might be supporting Unity of south with the unattractive Unity government may program the computerization in a way that they can easily manipulate(rig) the results or registration in favor of their choice(Unity).
