“Athor is a Criminal, he must face justice”, says South Sudan President

By John Agou

June 4, 2010 (JUBA) — President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit has described the former SPLA deputy Chief of Staff for Moral and Political Orientation, Lt. Gen. George Athor Deng as “a criminal and that he must face justice”.

Speaking during an occasion organized by Piji Community of Jonglei State to honour the new elected Member of Parliament for Piji County and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj. Gen. Gier Chuang Aluong on Friday at Nyakuron Cultural Center, in Juba President Kiir said the decision by Gen. Athor to rebell against the Government of Southern Sudan after losing the elections is unacceptable.

“It was wrong for Athor to rebelled against the Government and went ahead to kill innocent people at Doleib Hill after learning that he had lost elections. This was a criminal act and he is a criminal.”

President Kiir said Athor must face justice for crimes he has committed against innocent people. He further warned those who lost elections not to resort to violence as a way of addressing their grievances.

“I personally talked to Gen. Athor on the phone and told him not to rebel against the government but instead seek legal avenues to address his grievances. He didn’t listen instead he went ahead and attacked SPLA forces killing some of them. Now he must face justice for the crimes he committed against SPLA and civilians,” President Kiir stressed.

He called on Southern Sudanese to unite ahead of referendum as this is an important exercise that will affect them.

Gen. Athor had contested as an independent candidate for gubernatorial position for Jonglei against the incumbent Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk but lost the elections.

Forces loyal to ex-SPLA general and former candidate for Jonglei Governor, George Athor, attacked SPLA barracks in Doliep Hill, Jonglei, last April. The United Nations attempted to broker a deal to end his row with Juba over elections results but Southern Sudan government declined the offer because of the difficult conditions he had posed.

Since, his troops clashed with the southern Sudan several times and the semi autonomous region witnessed similar incidents in Unity and Upper Nile States, months ahead of a crucial referendum on self- determination.

GOSS Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, James Kok Ruea said Gen. Athor didn’t rebel in order to settle a personal problem with Maj. Gen. Gier Chuang Aluong as being alleged. “It’s not true that Gen. Athor rebelled against the Government of Southern Sudan because of Gier. Athor has his motives for rebelling against the government,” he said.

The Governor of Jonglei State, Kuol Manyang Juuk said Gen. Athor threatened to rebel long before elections took place. “Gen. Athor was prepared to rebel against the government even before elections took place and results announced by the National Elections Commission,” he said.

He alleged that that Gen. Athor is being supported by what he refers to as “outside forces”.

Separately, the Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Dr. Riek Machar praised the Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj. Gen. Gier Chuang Aluong for improving security in Southern Sudan. “Gier has done a tremendous job within a short period as the Minister of Internal Affairs and we encourage him to do even more especially during this critical moment as we approach referendum”, the VP said.

He added that the leadership of the Government of Southern Sudan will continue to support Maj. Gen. Gier to implement security programs all over Southern Sudan.

Kiir is being emotional and reckless when he takes a combative tone in trying to resolve this issue. If the idea is to scare Gen Athor, I think this is going to backfire badly. What should happen is that cooler heads need to look at the situation and realize that only inclusive and transparent gov’t is going to resolve the situation.

There are people who murdered thousands of civilians but were welcomed back into SPLM. For example, Riek Machar, Paulino Matip have committed numerous atrocities in South than what Gen Athor ever did. So far, Gen Athor has not attacked any civilian population in South. He is not initiating any operation against SPLA forces but merely defending himself and his forces against attacks.

    Salve Kiir Mayardit/SPLM In GOSS.

I think there is no doubt what Athor Deng, he was absolutely 100% wrongful acts but let us not forget that, these people who want to repeated the rebellion perhaps, they have been viewing the way of rebelling is the only for a person can get deputy in the SPLM and the good example is Riak Machar Teny. I do not support the Athor Deng but I wish the SPLM in Southern Sudan should have focusing two things. One is the unity of all Southern Sudanese people and 2. The ways of making referendum dream come true and let us leave the Athor’s case behind for later on. Now if we says this Athor is a criminal then, what about Riak Machar Teny.? It is true that, those who have been killed in the problem of Athor Deng are very innocently one however, they are fewers than thousands being killed by Riak Machar Teny’s case. I think this is very difficult question for you MR, Salve Kiir to answer or say that, Athor is a criminal and must face justice while, you have a deputy which have been committed more crimes ever and the real question is, who do you think will get a fair justince between these two men.? And who do you real consider the bad criminal of all these two men.?
I am sure if I ask all Southern Sudanese people about their views then, I belief most people they will says, they are all criminals both Athor Deng and Riak Machar Teny and law must not protect any criminal found committed crimes, because this is about law system and any leader in Southern Sudan should and must understand what is the law mean.

Yes Athor is criminal for killing the innocent lives, while you’re criminal for looting the GOSS fund. Mr Kiir I assure you that none of you is innocent; you and your counterpart Athor are both criminal for different facts. You can’t turn blind to your own records and releasing someone’s madness. If I could be in charge of UN I would request both of you to appear before the ICC judges. South Sudan has become home to silent criminals, GOSS gangs, looters, thieves and savages

My friend, are you talking about Dr John Garang de Mabior or what?
Perhaps you got lose on your thought because our hero Dr John Garang give you this CPA that you are relishing right now.

What a foolish person can talk nonesense. The rebellion of Riek Machar was Nyagatism. You join the Arab, then what sort of South” interest were he working with. He stabbed SPLM at the back, then what kind of interest are you talking about? he killed the innocent civilians, then what kind of interest are you talking about?

Why not you fight the Northern Sudan during the war instead of SPLM if yoy and likes fight for the self-dtermination of South.
What self-determination are you talking about? what about if all the tribe join Arab North during the war, would you talk about self-determination now?

In fact, this is why i devalue you thinking capacity because you or naath in general are low and you guys must thanks Dinka , Nuba, Mabaan,Fij(Blue Nile) and the rest of Southerners because they store the South for you other the South would be the breeding place for Jallaba. This is a fact!

I agree with you Kiir. This guy if he is not pushed from somewhere by now he must have come to a common grown with the governemnt of South Sudan. On first days of his rebellion I expressed my concern to SPLM/A to engage in dialgoue with those who feel they have been wronged. But today the complications Athor is making it shows beyond doubt that, this guy must be pushed by NCP to create instability in the South of Sudan. Athor lost even his relatives who believed from the begining that he was right! Sicne he has chozen the fight I think, no choice is left for the governemnt of South Sudan but also to fight him until he come to his common sense and sit to discuss the desputed and unresolved Isuues despite I am sure has nothing to fight for! Will he fight because he want to mobilized Dinkas against who????????? This is backwardeness my friend.

I can continue readind from the Cictionay until I fall down of hunger, thirst and malaria, but I have to go and find ways to secure my clan from Mr. Athor and Mr. SPLM/A.

Mr. President! This is not the way our problems can be resolved. It is the same FIRST statement we heard from you when Mr. Athor rebelled last April.

Let the criminals be dealt with the right people at the right time and with the right approach.

    Dear readers!

There is nothing again the Dissident Gen.Athor Deng to be remember by Salva Kiir to remember him. He has spoil his future plan to the zero level.

Our leaders are so greedy in leadership and there is no one who can be a leader if the people who are living with doesn’t elected him/her. Look for instance, Dr. Lam Akol and Dr. Riek Machar Teny betray SPLM in 1990’s and form Southern Sudan Integrated Movement (SSIM. Still the beg for SPLM leadership to forgive them and work for SPLM interest and they were not punish. How do you think others people do the same if the leaders committed crimes and still come back for their position.
Then still Dissident Athor will come back again for his chief of Staff

Although you make a good million things, but one painful mistake will spoil billion good things you have been doing to the people. This is so because Lt. gen.George Athor Deng will be remember ever for his courageous and heroic of 1990s and early 2000 when he was lock in circle with very few soldiers by NIF and many others rebels of Southern Sudan, but he managed to survive with both Soldiers and Civilians he had been in charged ,however, this painful mistake he made against the SPLA/M and Civilians that he was hero for has spoil many books that many people prepared to write about him and therefore am so sorry for him, but Southern Sudan people will forgive him if he reforms himself to normality.

    Thanks
