Abyei: Messeriya militia attack kills 5 Policemen, injure 2

By Julius N. Uma

June 6, 2010 (JUBA) — At least five Policemen were killed and two were seriously injured when armed Messeriya militias reportedly attacked Tajalen area, located 60 miles north of the oil-rich region of Abyei.

The General Union of the Messeriya, led by the duo of Mohammad Al-Asari and Mahdi Baboun reportedly masterminded Monday’s attack.

Following the incident, the Joint Integrated Units (JIU) and United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) forces reportedly rushed to the scene, but their intervention came rather too late.

Abyei Area legislator, Mr. Arop Madut Arop, told journalist yesterday that the attack was a planned move aimed at jeopardizing efforts to successfully demarcate the disputed north-south border areas.

Dinka Ngok and the Messeriya are the two tribes currently occupying the area, which has over the years been a center of controversies.

The Abyei boundary issue was last year referred to the Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration, after the SPLM and its northern counterparts failed to agree on its demarcation procedure.

However, in July last year, the Court of Arbitration made a 50-50 decision on the disputed oil-rich boundary, ruling that the boundaries be re-drawn, while the two tribes are to required participate in an Abyei referendum.

“This attack is not only aimed at preventing the successful demarcation of the north-south border areas, but it’s also a ploy by the Messeriya tribe to dislodge the Dinka Ngok before the Abyei referendum is conducted,” the Abyei area MP told Sudan Tribune in a separate interview.

Mr. Madut, acting on information provided by the Abyei Chief Administrator, further revealed that the Messeriya Union is actively mobilizing over 2,000 able-bodied men to join the militia with plans to cause more havoc.

The Messeriya, according to the MP, want to occupy the areas of Thigei, Langara, Pawul, Dek Jur and Pawet Kadit.

All efforts to reach Mr. Deng Koul, the Abyei Chief Administrator were futile as his phone was busy throughout. He did not return our calls either.

Meanwhile, the area has appealed to international community to put more pressure on the Khartoum regime, allegedly behind all these wave of insecurity concerns in the south.

“Members of the international community should exert more pressure on the NCP [National Congress Party] so that they desist from involving themselves in incidences that are likely to drag us back to war,” Mr. Madut said.

He also urged the Government of Southern Sudan to boost security in the region, by deploying more of its forces in the disputed oil-rich region. This, he said, would prevent the occurrence of similar incidences.

Abyei: Messeriya militia attack kills 5 Policemen, injure 2
    To: Mr, Arop Madut Arop.

Why are you letting the Messeriga get chance to mobilzing his 2000, Arab militia to attacked your people instead you should have been done your mobilization years ago to your people of Abyei first and arm them so that they can have to defend themselves and the land of Abyei.

Put in mind that, this Arab armies Tribe of Messeriga need most young of Abyeian people to deal with them by all mean. There are more than 45 thousand of the Abyeian’s popoulation and a lot of them are still in the Northern Sudan regions and this Messeriga militia conflict is one of your role in Abyei you guys must need to fight back with them or defeating them for good and don’t let them share your river any more as you all knew that, the friendship of Arab could result in genocide like Darfurian and the long suffering in the Southern Sudan are the good example of why Arab are completely bad people.

Abyei people must not give any chance to this Arab Tribe of Messeriga even if the Sudan government is arming them, you should try something different than being taking silent, there are tools in Southern Sudan and take it and use it so that this Arab will know also how bad you would be dealing with them too. Please call all Abyei youths in the North Sudan to come out and tell them you have to defend your community and your land because this is belong to you all.

Messeriga Tribe is free this time because it is a raining time and that is why they just acting inhuman primitively and killing innocent people but don’t make another mistake to allowing them to bring their animals to your land for water use purpose by next year please never do that. Messeriga Tribe and others none of Dinka Ngok in this region have no right to claim anything in Abyei region this is absolutely belong to the people of Abyei and your people must understand when you own something that is yours and you have to defend your land or properties without showing any kind of your weakness at all to these Arab Tribe of Messeriga.

This is the insane game of criminal Bashir, he armed his mongrel Messeriya to fuel the situation in Abeyi, and I beleive that after seccession he will take advantage of the same place to cause another war. My only advice to SPLA is to be prepare for 2011 with appropriate respond to any action should criminal continue this millita war in Abeyi.
