Sudan’s Lakes state establishes more police stations to curb insecurity

By Manyang Mayom

July 13, 2010 (RUMBEK) – Lakes state government plans to establish more police stations in different counties of the state in trying to curb the rising insecurity in the area.

Inspector of Police in Rumbek Central County, Colonel Mangar Aping Buoi, has said that the state police headquarters had decided to open more police centers along the roads and to cover eight counties of the state.

Mangar said Rumbek center is in the first phase of the plan to receive few police stations with the aim of bringing down insecurity.

He said that Rumbek town has been divided into what he called “Four Security Zones”, revealing that his department intends to establish a Police Station in each of the four zones, and staff the stations adequately.

The police chief explained that the new security establishments will bring security services to the people, hence reducing what he described as “the load on Central Police Station”.

He further said that the staff for the police stations are ready, adding that a temporary accommodation for them in tents is being organized. He also informed that the police officers had been patrolling Rumbek town from 6pm to 6am dawn to dust to ensure security for the civilians.

During elections campaign in April this year, current Lakes state governor, Chol Tong Mayay, assured to reduce the level of insecurity if elected governor of Lakes state.

However, after four months while in office, insecurity has persisted, resulting to several people killed in form of revenge, particularly in Cueibet County and in his home village.

His minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Agency, Mabor Mayen Wol, has however assured that tackling insecurity is one of the top priorities of Lakes state government.

    Dear people of lakes state,
establishment of more police station is not the good way of protection of insecurity, I hard it last year a person has been kill in the police station, then we realize that police are lacking of training, why do you like to open more police station with untrained police staff, Lakes states police like to ask money from the people who have not even committed the cases, I would like to assure you that establishment of more police station will create more insecurity because police are not yet train, we need Government of lakes state to relocate all the present police in lakes state and bring the trainees and professional police from others places.
    Thank for understanding,
