Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal state imposes restrictions on official travel

July 16, 2010 (AWEIL) — The governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state has imposed restrictions on travels abroad by state ministers, mimicking this week’s presidential order in Juba made by South Sudan president Salva Kiir.

At a meeting of the state Council of Ministers on Friday in the state’s capital Aweil, Governor Paul Malong, endorsed Kiir’s orders which imposed travel restrictions on ministers and senior civil servants of the semi-autonomous region.

Malong instructed members of his government to limit travels outside the state.

“All unnecessary travels involving funds for trips outside the state will have to be adequately justified. We have a lot to do this time. This is the difficult time,” he said.

Malong who became the first Southern Sudan state governor to announce travel restrictions, also called on his cabinet members to pay more attention to developmental plans, particularly in the sectors of agriculture, security, health and physical infrastructure.

“We have to focus on developmental plans and projects more than in the past. There is no time to waste flying around after private affairs,” he told the ministers.

Speaking in what appears to be an authoritative tone, he termed 2010 as a year of combating child maternal mortality rate and setting up health facilities in all rural areas as a way to implement his campaign promises.

“Universal access to clean drinking water, improved physical infrastructure, efficient delivery of public services, peace and security and the rule of law shall be the key in this new government,” he said.

Pledging not to tolerate any infringement to the bill of rights, Malong said that the 30% women share in government promised by Kiir on the elections campaign trail will be fulfilled by his government.

He also reiterated calls for his cabinet to consider recruiting young people.

“The youth should be provided employment opportunities and the education sector will be fully supported. I call upon the Cabinet to make sure that this order is fulfilled during my term of office,” he said.

    Dear Governor,
is good to have a fresh ideas for ruling the NBG rather then copied president orders or GOSS ideas. you have the capacity to think and decide but not to recycle the used ideas. You always copy what GOSS has made even in your structure of the state commission, you use same commissions GOSS has establish and they are not in the other 9 states of Southern Sudan I wonder where will u get the fund to run those commission?

Mr. Governor you need to have your own ideas if not the ones from within (NBG) Otherwise you will misdirect your leadership to the wrong direction,
