UN chief voices concern about situation in Darfur IDP camp
30 July, 2010 (Khartoum) – A spokesperson for the UN’s chief says that his boss is “concerned” about the situation in south Darfur’s Kalma IDP camp where clashes recently occurred between IDPs supporting Darfur peace talks and others opposed to them.
In a statement seen by Sudan Tribune today, the UN’s Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon said that he “urges all concerned to address their differences through political dialogue and to refrain from any action that could incite violence”
Several local media sources reported news in the past few days about clashes in some of Darfur’s IDP camps between IDPs in favor of the peace process and others rejecting it.
The daily newspaper Al-Akhbar reported on 29 July three IDPs were killed in Al-Humidya IDP camp in western Darfur when an altercation broke out between groups supporting Darfur peace talks in Doha and others opposed to the process.
The paper quoted a local official as saying that the group opposed to the talks is affiliated to the SLM rebel faction of Abd-al-Wahid Muhammad Nur.
