VP Taha says South Sudan independence will cause conflicts, disintegration

August 1, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan’s 2nd Vice President Ali Osman Taha warned today that the possible independence of the South will create havoc and chaos that was witnessed in countries with similar experiences.

“All the experiences of secession in the African continent was doomed to fail; in Ethiopia, Eritrea and the Congo” Taha told a youth gathering for the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) in the Sudanese capital.

“All the countries in the continent except two support North-South unity even the major powers hostile to Sudan” he added. “This means that there is no one is working for separation” Taha said describing pro-secession forces as “losers”.

“Even if the South separates it is threatened with further split if it witnesses differences” the Sudanese VP added.
Sudan’s referendum, a key provision of the 2005 peace deal which ended a devastating 22-year civil war between the north and south, is due next January, allowing southerners to choose independence or remain with a united Sudan.

Taha called for a national dialogue to focus on things that promote unity rather than encourage secession.

“The components of the unit are many, but were not sufficiently highlighted…the ethnic and racial diversity should not scare us because it represents one of the requirements for Sudan to remain one and united” he said.

“Separation means regression for each party to take a piece of land and leave the rest. Separation is a closed way of thinking that does not believe in regressive diversity and this is the first defeat for the separatist ideology” Taha said.

In the same meeting, the Sudanese industry minister and NCP figure said that North-South separation “cannot be allowed under any circumstances.

“The peace agreement gave the South 50% of the oil revenue for development, salaries and progress and what the government of national unity (GoNU) done in the South in development in areas of roads, bridges, dams, electricity to help Southerners in development to support the attractive unity” Awad Al-Jaz said.

The NCP is leading a campaign to encourage Southerners to vote for unity and observers say that the ruling party does not want to go down in history as the party which allowed the country to split.

    Mr. Vice President (Central government),

Don’t waste your time on what to do about the future of South Sudan.

Don’t you read the public opinion in the South already? We have already decided to vote for independence.

What you can focus on is to build good relations with the future independent South. Period!

That is a good advice, Mr. Vice President.

    To NCP,

Sudan get its independent in 1956,then what have you done to the people of South and the marginalized people in Sudan? This unity with North is another problem like the one of Addis Ababa, and many dishonored accords.

We South Sudanese are ready for those who seems obstacle for seperation. You have to know that we fought the war. You witness have many prisoners of war we gave back to you. This time, will be different because this war will mean hatred.period!

This is following a very predictable pattern. The choice of separation is one of the choices available to Southerners alone to decide. It is not for Taha or any other individual to decide. While I think the confederation arrangement with mechanisms for South to secede is a far better outcome, I think we have to accept the idea of South becoming a separate country.

The only wise thing to do is to let South separate in a peaceful and successful ways so that there is no antagonism between the two brotherly countries. If North force South into the corner, a devastating war will ensue and no one will know how to stop it. South will have a rallying point to wage a more protracted war. Unless North is ready to be ruined, it will have no choice but to accommodate the idea of an independent South.

VP Taha, there can be no real solution until south sudan becomes Independence. Every sudanese knows Political-Islam becomes the way of life and even is reflected in political and economic systems of Sudan. You simply reach a new low with your cynical argument that separatists are the losers on their views.

Please, Justice or moral is in the interests of the individuals. It is unjust, unwise to try to force unity on south sudanese. You need to take a realistic account or rational assessment of the controversial issue of independence or unity. You seems to only see it from your Islamic worldview and probably forget or simply ignore to see it from intellectual or your essential leadership position minus your personal bias.

South sudanese would rather see your cynical argument against their political objective(independence) as an expression of your personal bias based on your religious traditions or Islamic Ideology. That means you are only justifying your way of life here. But what about the way of life of others who do not share your ideology?

Your insights are not visions of essential truths for all sudanese. Therefore, endorsing unity option is NOT the best buy for all. Please, leave south sudanese alone to make up their own minds on the Referendum.

They alone are responsible for their own destiny, even if perhaps open to theoretical difficulties of their own(governance). They will easily forget their own differences and would quickly begin to build their own social policy based on their own chioces, free of old Sudan’s tyrannical character and political bias you just shown with your bizarre argument here.

1.There’s going to be war even before referendum but Sudan will never be one again! let get notice.

2 Furthermore,S.Sudan will never fail though rest of succession movement had fail to shrives because the monolithic type of country w.hich U like has not gone down well with us here in the south.

Taha has really lost his mind but clearly read the public opinion in the South Sudan. He knows pretty well that Southerners would vote for separation through ballot boxes or bullets. So the “Bribery Unity Projects” have certainly failed in the last hour of the interim period. Unity campaigners are losers that’s why he utters those long-time hidden feelings. Taha, be ready to harvest what you sowed. OK? Don’t waste your time preaching outdated unity. Prepare to live as a good neighbor.

Sudan is already widely known as a conflict-ridden and politically disintegrated country. The issues are essentially deepening because intransigence of Khartoum to implement CPA, EPA, DPA in good faith. South Sudan independence is not the cause of any conflict or disintegration. Religious and political marginalization are the cause of all the woes facing Sudan today since 1956.

Capitalization on proxy war, tribal conflicts that were there before Independence, insecurity, LRA, failure to demarcate N-S borders, inciting tensions between Dinka Ngok and Messiriya will never help NCP out of this mess. IF AL is sleeping, regional and international community are closely watching Khartoum political activities. How can you impose unity if even voluntary unity is not existent in the political arena?

Our people should not be duped again with these baseless propagandas. I previous commented that these hyenas of Khartoum will try ever tactics available to them to make Southerners believe there will be something wrong with an independent South Sudan. Mr. Taha keep talking about unity and the question is why would non-Muslims opt for unity when sharia is still the law of the land? South Sudan would be better off without North.
