Three people killed by SPLA soldier in Eastern Equatoria state

By Manyang Mayom

August 7, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – Three people were killed and a number of others wounded when a soldier from the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) opened fire and shot at his victims indiscriminately before he was also killed on Thursday in Kapoeta town of Eastern Equatoria state.

Two of the dead were SPLA soldiers and one civilian while five others sustained serious wounds and were taken to hospitals in Torit and Juba for medical care, according to an eye witness.

Owen Bosco also confirmed that the soldier was also killed when some other soldiers tried to stop him as he was shooting randomly.

The Kapoeta South County Commissioner, Martin Lorika, said the incident happened in the early hours of the morning, causing panic in the town. Lorika said the authorities have started investigating the cause of the deadly incident.

Another conflicting source suggested that the dead included an SPLA 1st lieutenant and two businessmen.

The Kapoeta South County Commissioner explained that confirmed that the male soldier, who was staying in one of the SPLA barracks in Kapoeta, picked up his AK47 rifle and shot his superior first. He then took off to the town streets, shooting everybody including businessmen in their shops which, he said, forced some other SPLA soldiers to also shoot and kill him.

Commissioner Lorika noted that the reason was not clear on why this soldier killed people randomly since the event of killing started inside the army barrack and spread into the town, adding the authorities will investigate the matter.

Lorika however said the situation in his County has returned to normal situation and business activities have continued in the town and that some security measures are going to be taken.

    Dear Readers,

SPLA vs. SPLA in their barracks in Eastern Equatoria? Something is so fishy, but let wait for the investigation first. My hearfelt condolence to the families of the two soldiers and the by-stander killed in this peaceful time in south sudan.

The matter may be an isolate disgruntled act of an individual soldier. May the victims of this sensless episode rest in peace. God help south sudan.

    Dear Readers,

This is not the first time SPLA soldiers killed their fellow comrades or civilian in Kapoeta. On the 26/07/2010 an SPLA soldier also killed two civilians including one Kenyan lady and escaped without being caught up to now. The authorities is to take this issue seriously before things goes worse. If now our SPLA soldiers are killing their own people, who will then protect us from outsiders?. I mean those who want to bury the CPA. If GOSS is serious to restore peace and stability in Kapoeta town, let it transfer these soldiers in Kapoeta to another destination, because they are enjoying drinking and doing businesses that’s why they don’t respect their military code of conduct. Get new battalion to Kapoeta.
May God the Almighty Father rest those who passed away in Eternal Live.Amen.
