By James Gatdet Dak

August 7, 2010 (JUBA) – The President of the semi-autonomous Government of Southern Sudan and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), General Salva Kiir Mayardit, has promoted the army’s top officer to the rank of General.

The Chief of General Staff of the SPLA forces, James Hoth Mai, formerly a Lieutenant General, has been promoted to the current highest rank in the region, similar to the rank of his Commander-in-Chief, General Salva Kiir Mayardit and Deputy Commander-in-Chief, General Paulino Matip Nhial.

President Kiir on Saturday said the promotion was a continuation of the reorganization of the army.

In addition to the promotion of the army chief, Kiir also promoted Major General Wilson Deng to the rank of Lieutenant General. He also promoted 20 Brigadier Generals to the rank of Major General.

He told the army to be on guard in carrying out its duty of defending peace and maintaining security in the semi-autonomous region.

The people of Southern Sudan will, in five months time, conduct a referendum in accordance with the 2005 North-South Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which is widely expected to result to independence of the South.

Why promote Wilson Deng, what has he achieved? They only amased wealth with Riek Machar during the so called peace negotiations between Ugandan government and the notorious LRA.It was ploy designed by Riek,so that they get access to international community coffers,to prove to the world that an elusive peace is an elusive peace indeed.

    Hoth deserves it!
Hoth Mai deserve the highest possible rank in our military but my advice to him is that he should not start behaving like George Athor.

When everyone praised Athor for his sacrifices during the war; he thought, he was above the law and took the law into his hands!. Which resulted in him being the most loathed person (a head of Lam Akol) in South Sudan.

Wilson (aka Amoocharab) deserves promotion too. His capture of Pochalla in 1996 was good but failure on Pibor …

Does the SPLA know how to deal with MI-24 gunship and MiG-29 Fulcrum? Those are weapon systems that the SAF has fielded against our measly T-72 and infantry forces made up of illiterate goat herders. If war were to break out today, South would lose badly and when peace is reached, North will own all oil fields and then some. So our military leadership should have the plan to deal with SAF in the first 24 hours of war.

i think it was a wise decision by president of the autonomous government General Salva Kiir to promote James Hoth to the rank of general because since the start of the movement, he had never defected from SPLA upto date.He is the hero and patroit. He deserves it.I would say corngrass to him.
