Four arrested in connection to murders in Lakes State cattle attack

By Manyang Mayom

August 7, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – Four youth from Cueibet County of Lakes state have been arrested for the murder on August 31 of two girls at Chiloc cattle camp in Rumbek North County.

The governor of Lakes state Chol Tong Mayay confirmed to Sudan Tribune that four suspects are being held by his security forces in Cueibet County.

Speaking by phone, Mayay said that they would be transferred to the states central prison on Monday morning where they will face trial.

A Cueibet County youth group has denied their members are guilty of the double murder and have alleged that the girls may have been killed by a relative who had discovered they had agreed to have extra-marital relationships with men in the area.

Isaac Mayek Noah, commissioner of Rumbek North (Maper) County dismissed the claims saying that the shooting was carried out by youth from Cueibet County in order to provoke a reprisal attack from people in his county.

“I am [very] sorry to have learned that youth of Cueibet are denying the killing” he said.

The Rumbek North commissioner said the four suspects would have to defend themselves in court.

Mabor Mayen Wol, Lakes state minister for local government and law enforcement has also made a statement indicating that he believes that those arrested were guilty of killing the girls.

Deaths related to cattle rustling are common in Lakes State.
On August 4, 22 people were killed in Yirol County in a raid that attempted to capture over a hundred cows.

Yirol East County commissioner Athian Majak Malou told Sudan Tribune that in the aftermath of the raid “over 100 calves are left without milk to feed since their mothers were confiscated by looters and now most of [these] calves are likely to die.”

The Lakes State government has requested extra police from southern Sudan’s capital Juba.

Wol, the minister responsible for security in Lakes State has said that Yirol County is now under control and the culprits were being pursued by a joint operation of his security services.

He vowed to return the stolen cows to their rightful owners.

The message should be pass all over southern Sudan that those who take other people’s lives intentionally should loose their lives as well. If the caught guys are guilty of murder. They should be killed in a brought day light at the freedom square. Their execution should be witnessed by journalist and then air over radios and TV. This will deter criminals. Some of our top coward officials usually fear KAWAJAT, human right watch and ICC. This is a matter of justice. The same punishment is going on in the home countries of those KAWAJAT who tend to talk loud on this topic. They should correct in their countries before they talk to us on anything regarding such issues.

Any other alternative in the justice system will reward these criminals and will definitely encourage others to commit the same crime. Thieves and robbers will be everywhere on major roads trying to rob and kill people in buses. Live of the ordinary citizen will be miserable.

I think we have to kill people in order to save people.
