Darfur’s Ghazi renews request to handover wanted Kalma IDPs
August 10, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Presidential adviser Gahzi Salah Eddin, renewed today a demand to handover to the Sudanese government six people suspected of taking part in recent clashes inside one of largest IDPs camps in Darfur.
Top senior Sudanese officials including President Omer Al-Bashir repeated on a daily basis their demand to handover the wanted people. The head of the peacekeeping mission is in conducting a series of meetings in Khartoum seeking to persuade them to change their mind.
Violence broke out on July 29 among residents of Kalma camp over their position from the peace process held in Doha. Five people were killed and three others injured as result of the clashes.
The United Nations from New York commissioned the head of the peacekeeping mission, Ibrahim Gambari, to persuade the Sudanese government to put aside their demand to handover the six IDPs who take refuge at the UNAMID policing center in Kalma. The UN fears any escalation may undermine efforts to bring the branch of the rebel Sudan People’s Movement (SLM) led by Abdel Wahid Al-Nur to Doha.
During a meeting with Gambari on Tuesday, Ghazi Salah Eddin who is also in charge of Darfur dossier, once again confirmed his Government’s request to handover of the six residents of Kalma camp.
This demand is “consistent with the law and the sovereign rights,” Gahzi said according to the official news agency SUNA.
The Presidential adviser met today with the press in Khartoum to explain his plans to end the Darfur conflict from inside Sudan.
The center of gravity in the peace talks, he said, should be located inside Sudan through the implementation of recovery programs, development and the return of IDPs to their homes.
The Sudanese official believes all the elected organs in Darfur states should be involved in the process.
All these factors according to Ghazi should pour into Doha, the official venue for the peace talks with the rebel movements, and push in favor of a comprehensive deal including all the representatives of Darfur political and social forces.
