Southern school girl best student in Khartoum

August 14, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – A 17 year-old Southern Sudanese girl has been announced the winner in one of the private secondary schools in Khartoum.
Ms. Winny Costa Mapuor is declared yearly academic winner of Khartoum Diplomatic Secondary School (KDS) this week achieving a provisional result of ‘A+’.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday, in a press conference organized by her mother in Khartoum, Costa said that her mother had been very supportive to her during her studies.

Costa told journalists she used to make a lot of mistakes but her mother was always forgiving her, adding that she owed a lot to her mother. Speaking with her tears flowing down her cheeks she said, “I appreciate [the] whole school administration of Diplomatic School for making my future attractive; for having educated me to be also among future leaders of Sudan.”

Declaring her choice of study in higher education, Costa said “Khartoum university is my choice specially faculty of medicine. I need to study medicine so that to help poor community in health issues. Southern Sudan has lack of doctors and diseases are common and I always hear people are dying of diseases – I will make sure to graduate at University of Khartoum and I must first go to work in southern Sudan to help my people in [the] south.”

“Overwhelmed thank goes to my beloved mama Rose Costa Mapuor for having educated me among her children, I will not forget her in my life and I always pray God to give me more wisdom to help my mother like she always help me during dangerous zone of my life,” she said.

Winny’s mother, Rose Costa thanked her daughter for her effort which made her to become winner in the school. “My effort to educate this child with a lot of money is no any longer waste. I am very happy when I hear she is a winner- I will still assist her in all her education requirement,” said Rose.

“My teachers, including teacher Frances Kahebo and Emmanuel Ochieng plus our private driver (…….) have really done the best of their ability to educate me. I thank them all and I promise that if I complete my study, these groups will get payback from me direct,” she assured.

Khartoum Diplomatic School is a private British-established learning institution in the national capital.

Johnson Nyeko, the headmaster of Khartoum Diplomatic Secondary School said his school was progressing well.

    Congratulations Ms.Winny.I wish you all the best in the celebration for this National achievements however,i hope your success is NOT connected by Northern Sudan Government for making unity attractive in all levels for the Southerners.

    Any way,you have made the history among the Southerners who have passed in the North but have not been declared winners until this crucial moments

    Just a reminder to the journalist,the grade is A Plain Not plus as there is no another letter beyond A.That is the grading methodology in Kenya.
