Renk commissioner warns against power lines vandalism

August 18, 2010 (RENK) – Col. Deng Akueny, Renk County commissioner on Wednesday inaugurated Renk Gas Corporation calling for collective responsibility from the surrounding community to preserve the power plant in the town.

He urged the communities which will benefit from the project to collaborate with Renk County Electric Supply authorities in putting reliable security system in place and identifying individuals intending to vandalize the project. He said the Renk Gas Corporation project is key development catalyst for the communities.

“It’s upon you to take responsibility to protect the project infrastructure from vandalism such as draining oil from the transformer, stealing electrical cables. The government will take stern measures against all culprits who will be nabbed,” he said.

“It is upon you to harness fully the opportunities of having plentiful supply and reliable electricity to invest in a variety of social and economic activities such as agriculture, health, education, industry, fishing and business in order to improve your living standards,” he said.

The commissioner said the first challenge to overcome was to build quality and standard houses before installing electricity. Our people and my administration will be pleased if in a short period of time the communities demand more than what is said to be plentiful in supply.

He continued to say if the whole amount of power generated would be utilized; it would mean the project plan was a success. He told the communities that the project was theirs and that it was for their benefit, adding that the government has invested a huge amount of money to make it a reality.

Akueny said the project was a continuation of the government efforts to implement various policies ensuring that its people get cheap, reliable and environmentally friendly power. In implementing the Renk gas project, the government compensated all the people where the project passed and that they were supplied with water and electricity.

To speed up power supply to the rural areas, the government formed a committee for which already over 48 residences in the town are supplied with electricity. Currently this committee is undertaking projects worth 100,000 million Sudanese pounds- financed by the government, covering various areas in the county set to be completed in a year’s time.

“The government will continue to improve the county Run Power supply and will extend it to the neighboring areas soon in order to achieve its targets of having cheap and reliable electricity across the area,” he added.

Commissioner Akueny expressed gratitude for the people’s patience during the installation process. He also thanked those who contributed to successful completion of the project who he said include the state government, business community and implementing company.
