SPLM concedes position of the referendum body SG
August 23, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) has agreed to let a Northerner hold the post of the Secretary General of the referendum commission, multiple sources told Sudan Tribune.
The decision follows fierce battle between the SPLM and the National Congress Party (NCP) over the post which threatened to further delay the conduct of the key vote scheduled for January 9, 2011.
The veteran lawyer Omer Al-Sheik, who worked in the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), is expected to be tapped as the commission’s secretary general.
The SPLM launched a fierce media campaign against Al-Sheik, accusing him of “incompetence” and “failure” during his tenure in MINURSO and as such he is not fit to hold the SG position.
Sources tell Sudan Tribune that Al-Sheik strongly resisted the nomination but that the head of the referendum commission Mohamed Ibrahim Khalil urged him to accept it. The secretary-general controls the funds and budget of the commission.
Khalil had threatened to resign if the SPLM continue to stall the appointment of a Northerner Secretary General stressing that Southerners already control 59 out of 63 positions outlined in the Referendum Law.
The referendum a key plank of the 2005 peace deal that ended a decades-long civil war between north and south Sudan, is due to take place on January 9, 2011 and promises southerners the chance to choose independence.
Khalil has warned that it will be extremely difficult for the commission to fulfill its mandate by the due date stipulated by the CPA.

SPLM/A has given much concession on power money sharing to the gvoernemnt in the North Sudan on exchange for referandum and now they also give in the referandum to NCP. What is wrong? SPLM/A always disappoint its supporters in such weak ways. When SPLM/A and NCP were forming their new cabinet in first place, they fought over Ministries of Energy and mining& of Finace but suddnetly the SPLM/A declined and we were all dsappointed and today here they are!!!! In the coming days we may also be surprised by a big statement that we are one people so let Jallabas to rule us or share the oil money with us they are our brothers. What a hell is going on??? This must be ideas of Luka Biong to Uncle Sam

Northerner again to be General secretary for Southern Sudan Independent? It is a great sadness to all the Southern Sudanese and Southern Sudanese people had suffered lots for decades of years for their flauds.
We should be reasoning enough because our brothers in northern Sector are all against Southern Sudan referendum. Indeed they are triators for Southerners rights.
Is it because there is no well qualified person from the Southern Sudan sector that why that position is given to Northerners? there are thousands of questions to be ask.
Remember, how peaceful the hyena is, it can never be confine with the goats in one house-room.
Have we forget that Omer Al-Sheik is an Arab or because he work with United Nations (UN) that why we trust him.
Arabs are the same dear!
Watch out, He will never allow referendum for Southern Sudan at all.

Let the NCP take all the SRC seats if that is what they want but we are going for Independent South Sudan. Let them fight, give money or pray to Allah for help but we can not be in a united Sudan, Never.

Dear Sutherners
Giving SG post to NCP,does not mean SPLM are weak for NCP they want to delay this Referendum or it should fail 100% negative,if you have been following the workshop in Juba University By the GOSS Vice president and the Minister of information they said.
The referendum result will be make know in every centre before reaching the bloody hands of the NCP who are in the Referendum committee,let us not panic of that,our voting is my worried.

Why all the commissions of Referendum given to northerners why because of what.latter on they are the one who will announce the referedum voters results. i do not trust Arab even if Southern Sudan separation result reach 50 or 51% as stated by CPA they will rig it because they are the only head there in Khartoum. Any way no worry we go like that untill we Unilaterally Declare Independent of Southern Sudan whether Arab of north like or not.That is my anticipation to the future of Referendum; Southern Sudanese will finally Declare Her separation through SSLA Period and mark my word.Arab are rejecting separation of Southern Sudan as you all know, how can they do some good to support separation. they are anti-separation let us use logic.No more unity if they are insisting us for separtion then we will go back to square one where we are before all to demarcate the Southern Sudan Border through any mean they want.we only want the implementation of CPA for the Honor of our Hero Dr. John Garang De Mabior and nothing will connect us with Arab of North again.

We should not mourn so much the SPLM concession of the Secretary General position to Northerners, because as much as we want to occupy the position ourselves, we also need legitimacy of the Referendum result. So if we gonna, as sure as I am, choose Separation then the Northerner’s announcement of our independence will confound all the doubting Thomases.
I hope SPLM have perceived this.

Dear readers the SG for referendum not so crucial than five years we spent in CPA with NCP sponsoring militas to destablise us in the South. we just left with 120 days plus if Am not mistakeen.And do away with brutal regime of Omar Hassen. It is a sure deal whether all members of the committee are Northerners I personally don’t mind because a matter of legalizing the independence of South Sudan and even NCP is aware of this. There comes 9th January 2011 with voting or not the World will register the new nation which is the Republic of South Sudan.
