US and South Sudan to launch fund for agriculture development

August 24, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — United Sates of America and Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) are expected to launch on Wednesday a joint fund to promote development of agriculture in South Sudan.

The USAID, the Office of US Special Envoy to Sudan and GOSS opened on Tuesday a two-day conference in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi to tackle “challenges and priorities for revitalizing agriculture in southern Sudan”.

On Wednesday the meeting will “launch an Agriculture Innovation Fund designed to finance public-private sector partnerships promoting new approaches to agricultural development in southern Sudan,” said a statement issued by USAID today.

The US aid body said it would further establish a United States-Southern Sudan Agriculture Advisory Council to advise the two partners “on the design and assessment of agriculture development programs in southern Sudan”.

Despite enormous agriculture potential, the economy of Southern Sudan, which may vote in favor of the establishment of an independent state next January, is based mainly on oil revenue.

Besides the US and GOSS governments, participate at the conference other international donors, agricultural research organizations, financial institutions, and multinational agribusinesses.

Devastated by Sudan’s 22-year civil war, the development of agriculture in the semi-autonomous region suffers from poor transport, limited storage capacity and processing facilities, and a poor investment climate.

See, that is why land is more valuable than Bashir’s money! Those of you who are tempted, before taking those money, close you eyes and imagine the green dot. Imagine how much your land worth! Thank you!

This is a nice idea. But what we don’t need from them is the import of GM seeds to South Sudan. I heard ealier this year that there were seeds distributed to farmers in Equatoria, those might have been genetically modified. I know everything going from the West to Africa or other undeveloped world is always received with admiration, but people don’t know how cunning those western people are. Unwanted things sometimes are repacked and send because they have become useless to them and they don’t want to fill their land with them because some are toxic to the soil, water courses and mostly to living things. So, the only option for them is to export and sale them to third world for less and then soon become rubbish and ultimately end up as toxics and unrecovered waste in our land.

It would be a good idea if they can help in term of training, but apart from that, it throws someone like me in a doubt.

South Sudan is now like a growing baby who wants to know and learn everything. So, Southerners be vigilant on every aspect of life. We can’t always be submissive to everything. We first have to examine whether it is a deal we make with other country, or anything being brought to the country with the relevant skill and knowledege. That’s how each and every nation on this planet protect their way of life.

I hope that’s a helpful piece of advice.

    Love South Sudan!!!
