South Darfur governor accuse UNAMID of complicity with IDP’s

August 25, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – The governor of South Darfur Abdel-Hameed Kasha accused the African Union-United Nations mission in Darfur (UNAMID) of non-cooperation with the government in resolving the situation in Kalma IDP camp which witnessed violence clashes last month between those who support peace talks and those who oppose it.

Local media cited Kasha as threatening to enter the camp by force to collect weapons and arrest those accused of inciting the clashes which killed more than half a dozen IDP’s.

The governor said that UNAMID has failed to assist the government in clearing out the camp or conduct patrols to gather weapons and arrest the wanted individuals or even surrender the corpses of those who perished to bury.

Sudan wants UNAMID to hand over six people to face trial over their role in the clashes. However, the peacekeeping force want guarantees that they will be treated in accordance with international and humanitarian laws before they take such a step.

Kasha blasted the mission saying that some of its elements are discouraging the camp residents from leaving the camp for relocation by threatening to deny them from receiving their food rations.

“We will enter the camp whether UNAMID likes it or not,” he warned and threatened to respond swiftly to any resistance.

This month, the South Darfur governor revealed that he is working to relocate the residents of Kalma in two camps with a capacity of 25 to 30 thousand people, equipped with all basic services.

But the outgoing UN humanitarian chief John Holmes warned that the Sudanese authorities must not forcibly move the IDP’s.
