Death toll rises to nine in West Darfur camp
September 7, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Peacekeepers say at least three people have died by an attack on displaced camp near Zalingei, West Darfur last week, pushing the death tool to nine victims.
Six people were killed following an attack on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp of Al-Hamadiya on the night of 3 and 4 September. The residents accused the government militiamen but the UNAMID said failed to identify the assailants.
The bloody attack took place after similar one against civilians in Tabra, in northern Jebel Marra North Darfur state, where some 74 people were killed.
More three inhabitants of the Hamadiya IDPs camp “have died as a result of injuries sustained during a firefight in the camp,” UNAMID said in a statement put out on its website today.
“The development brings the number of fatalities to nine and injured to more than 20.”
Yesterday, Paris based Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) rebel leader threatened to declare war against the government saying he couldn’t watch the killing of civilians inside the camps as the UNAMID was unable to perform its duties.
The escalation of violence inside the camps may undermine efforts by the mediation to reach a comprehensive peace agreement including all the rebel groups.
Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) welcomed an initiative by the Joint Chief Mediator aiming to persuade the rebel group to resume talks in Doha. Djibril Bassole said he is working to secure a meeting with Khalil Ibrahim inside Darfur.
Also Abdel Wahid Al-Nur said he is considering to participate in Doha process ending his boycott of the peace process.
The hybrid peacekeeping which came under fire from all the parties to the conflict said it had intensified its presence throughout Al-Hamadiya, including the use of night patrols.

Death toll rises to nine in West Darfur camp
The new plan of peace from within of the regime is in itself declaration of war since until now more than 200 people were killed in Kalma, Tabara and Al-Hamiddiyya due to imposing peace from within of the regime, with full accord and blessing of President Obama’s envoy Gration and UNAMID chief Gambari and some circles within the International Community. Therefore my plea to the people of Darfur of African origin is to arm themselves and not to depend on any outside power to protect them like the UNAMID, which today is providing the genocide regime of Khartoum with intelligence information about the IDPs to accomplish their last part of genocide. I believe that time has come for the people of Darfur to declare total war not only against the regime of Khartoum but also against the UNAMID which was paranoid by the genocide regime to the extend that is becoming one of its tools in the region and claiming fake protection to assist the regime continue its crimes.
