MP of SPLM-DC designated as leader of parliamentary opposition in South Sudan

September 7, 2010 (JUBA) – The SPLM-dominated parliament in the semi-autonomous region has elected Tuesday a member of SPLM-DC as leader of the opposition three months ahead of crucial referendum on self-determination.

The Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) named today Onyoti Adigo Nyikwec from the breakaway SPLM-DC led by Lam Akol as leader of the opposition in the chamber where seat four members of his party.

“It is the first time in the history of southern Sudan to have the leader of the opposition in the parliament,” said Nyikwec in his acceptance speech before the SSLA. “This is the real democracy which has been guiding the principles we fought for so many years,” he further said.

The SPLM-DC which splinted from the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in June last year accused the latter of intimidating its members and banning its activities. Following April elections the immunity of its four MPs had been suspended over alleged links with militias activities.

The breakaway party is accused of being funded and manipulated by the northern Sudan ruling National Congress Party to destabilize security and undermine the referendum on southern Sudan independence scheduled for next January.

In a long opinion paper, Lam Akol, SPLM-DC leader, urged to create a conductive environment to make the outcome of the referendum credible and accepted by all the parties.. Among the measures required by the opposition leader, there are issues of “securityand the provision of freedom of expression for all the people as well as freedom of assembly and movement”.

“There is no sense in conducting a referendum whose result will be questionable or disputed. It is known that the ultimate goal of the agreement is to realize sustainable peace, therefore, if the agreement ends up in a situation that may ignite war once more, we would have compromised the goal of the agreement.”

Nyikwec voiced before the assembly his support for the independence of the semi-autonomous region. He further called to join hands to establish the best conditions for credible referendum.

“The referendum needs us to unite all our ranks together, so that we go to the referendum united as the people of southern Sudan for the independence of southern Sudan,” Nyikwec said.

To the SPLM-DC and others, Goal Congruence Does not Work in Politics!!!

The SPLM and as well as known as GoSS has Reached the World Culmination of Justice and Fairness

That’s automatically guarantee the SPLM party to provide and meet fundamental rights and needs of the citizens of South Sudan after and when successful in the Referendum that just to be conducted. The SPLM as a major party in South Sudan is congratulated and appreciated for the steps moved to implement the democracy in the South Sudan by offering the opportunity for the opposition leader in the South to exercise his leadership activities. That will make tough challenge to other leaders who are pushing to meet their goal congruence between the NCP and the SPLM. Indeed Dr Lam and George Athor have missed this great chance to Mr Nyikwec who was deceived and have now realised the deceptive and misrepresentation that always confused and destructed the southerner’s struggles by their own southerners.

Indeed Mr Nyikwec “The referendum needs us to unite all our ranks together, so that we go to the referendum united as the people of southern Sudan for the independence of southern Sudan”.

That’s a good initiative from the SPLM leadership, the upcoming events need a united southerners , oppositions whom are really welling to work for the betterment of democratic conducts and freedom of thoughts and believe are more than welcome, but we have a different concern to those still supported by the NCP and armed to destabilize peace and security in the south, I think it’s not too late for SPLM-DC to ask for forgiveness, and give up the scheming games they are conducting on behalf of the NCP.

This is a step in a right direction but more need to be done to have a good political climate for opposition parties to function in south Sudan. Genuine political parties must be allow to carry out their duties without fear of intimidation from the ruling party. This is best way we can achieve what we fought for.

The notion that every person must join SPLM is politically absurd and is not good for south Sudan future. We need to be different from regimes that have governed in Khartoum up to the current NIF regime. To be different from the current NIF regime is to have a real democracy and not token democracy. We must accept people with different views on how our country should be governed. We do not to condemn people for expressing their political opinion on any issue like what happened recently to Dr Lual Deng.

The time for arm rivalries among south sudanese must be put to an end and new dawn for opposing ourselves on ideas need to be given a chance. Our hope is that south sudan is not going to be like other African countries (e.g Uganda, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Eritrea…etc) that have denied their people the freedom they bitterly fought for.

    Well done GoSS,

To have a freedom of speech, media and freedom of business in the country is the really key of prosperous and unification. Come on GOSS, you are nearly there to reveal the mirror to the world stage and show them that Southern Sudan can/would able to rule themselves without any doubt.

    Thanks

Our southern sudan parliament is not virus free this time, Southerners should take care of these viruses. They could deflect us from our right direction.

Now the SPLM, the GoSS and SSLA are trying to improve their political image. This is excellent and some of us who have been in a serious opposition and criticism camps are really moved by this change of heart from our brothers and sisters of the South. It is time to hold each others hands and march as one people to the dignity of independence.

Congratulations to South Sudan, Congratulations to SPLM-DC and its leader Dr Lam Akol Ajawin, Congratulations to Hon. Onyoti Adigi Nyikwec for the top opposition post, and thanks to Speaker Wani Igga and other SPLM MPs who form the majority members for a work well done that can relieve us from the worries from a dysfunctional parliament.
