U.S. officials confirm plans to name Gration as ambassador to Kenya

September 12, 2010 (WASHINGTON) – The United States president Barack Obama intends to name his special envoy to Sudan Scott Gration as ambassador to Kenya likely in the coming months, the New York Times (NYT) reported today.

Last month, U.S. based Foreign Policy magazine quoted multiple sources as saying that Gration “is considering taking the job of U.S. Ambassador in Nairobi.”

However, the sources said that Gration is lobbying to keep his Sudan portfolio even as ambassador to Kenya which the magazine said will likely become an uphill battle doomed to fail.

The NYT citing unnamed U.S. officials said today that Obama, who has personal ties with Gration, plans to name him as ambassador to Kenya.

The administration officials said that Obama had long wanted to post the envoy in Nairobi, where General Gration spent part of his childhood and later helped train the Kenyan air force.

Gration said he is prepared to take any post as decided by his boss.

“If the president decides to move me to another job, that’s his prerogative,” General Gration said when asked about his future. “I’m committed to this job until I’m given a new job.”

The newspaper said that the January 2011 referendum in South Sudan is likely to be Gration’s last major effort as special envoy.

Gration has been an unpopular figure in Washington, since his appointment in Macrh 2009, where he was seen by advocacy groups as someone who favoured lenient approach with the Sudanese government headed by president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and genocide he allegedly masterminded in Darfur.

The Sudanese presidential adviser Mustafa Ismail said this week that Gration despite his frequent visits has failed to produce any big impact on the country’s pressing issues.

Welcome to Kenya, Gen. Scott Gration as the US Ambassador to my neighboring sisterly country. I hope I will soon be your counter-part as the first full Ambassador to Kenya representing the new Republic of South Sudan in 2011.

I am sure Kenyans are much loved by God. If this cold speech man named, Gartion appeared in Kneya before voting for referendum”Kenya Moja Katiba impia” I am sure Kenyans grassroots would have suffered to death. Gration Scott always stands on the side of the oprressors against the poors as a case in Sudan; he does’t care how far people suffers. Since he was appointed as US Envoy to Sudan number of people killed exceeded the numbers killed in twp years before he was sent to Sudan. He stopped other International opinions on Darfur and imposed his poor policies of the big ass country.

I am sure people in Kalma IDPs kamp will celeberate this news and distribute Lema “The boiled millet”.

Sending Gration as ambassador to Kenya will be a punishment to fellow Kenyans who endorsed their new constitution recently. Gration has failed in his policies in Sudan; so his personal ties with President Obama should not be used to besmirch the external policies of U.S at the expense of the America people. Gration took a lot of bribes from the regime and it’s just a matter of time Mustafa Ismail and his colleagues will reveal the nasty deeds of Gration.

The problem with the so-called United States Ambassadors is that they behave as though they had all the Executive powers to rule various countries they are nominated to. The former US Ambassador to Kenya, Mr. Reneberga conducted himself a bit more than Pres. Bush himself would. He lord it over Kenyans. I hope Mr. Gration will remember that Kibaki is superior to him this time and that he deserves his respect.
I wish you the best in Nairobi, Hon. Gration. You have done your part of diplomacy required from a man of your calibre esp. in regard to CPA implementation. In case of any bomb blast after you, we shall immediately point our fingers to you, because you were a little bit too close to Mr. Bashir. Meaning that you it was possible for you to conspire with the villain
