South Sudan to represent East Africa in school sports competitions in USA

September 20, 2010 (JUBA) – The semi-autonomous region of Southern Sudan has been selected by the countries in East Africa to represent their countries in the upcoming secondary school sports competitions scheduled to take place next year in the United States of America (USA).

Following the recently concluded sports competitions in Kenya by the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSA) during which Southern Sudan won second position to Kenya in basketball competition by beating the rest of East African countries, FEASSA body decided to elect team from the semi-autonomous region to represent the whole of East Africa against other secondary schools teams in USA.

The minister of Youth and Sports in the Government of Southern Sudan, Makuach Teny, in his presentation to the Council of Ministers on Friday, said he was preparing the team for the upcoming competitions. Teny commended FEASSA for giving Southern Sudan full membership in the organization and the selection of its team to represent East Africa in the world schools competition as the region was awaiting the conduct of the referendum on independence.

According to the official spokesperson and minister of Information and Broadcasting, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, Southern Sudan has great potential in sports and culture if the two were to be developed.

He expressed the need to engage youth in sports activities in the region, which he said would help in diverting them from criminal activities such as cattle rustling.

The cabinet per the presentation of minister Teny resolved to establish Southern Sudan Sports Council to step up developing of sports various activities in the region. Football and other sports activities such as short and long distance marathon competitions were among the sports activities to be developed in the region.

It also resolved that all schools compounds, public and private, should have allocated for sports fields and facilities as a compulsory standard.

Southern Sudan has produced some of its sons who have excelled in the basketball competitions such as late Manut Bol who began to play the type of sports successfully since 1978 as his rare tall height among the players contributed to his success in the matches.

    What a greate news to the yet to be born nation of East Africa!
    Many thank to Eat African nations that gained courage and openly recognised South Sudan as one of their members’ state and mandated her High School basketball team to represent them in the USA high school competition next year.

    Politickingly, the result of badly awaited referendum is already known to wise and pure heart countries though dark-hearted ones cast doubt on it. bravo our sisters states of East Africa..
