Jonglei: One death in Pangak County Civil Hospital fire

September 22, 2010 (BOR) — At least one person is confirmed dead in the fire at Pangak County Civil Hospital in northern Jonglei state.

According to the county commissioner, James Maluit Ruach, the fire broke out on September 20, 2010 at 2:30 pm, killing one person and leaving another man with slight injuries, adding that the “deceased was a driver working for World Vision in the county”.

World Vision is a Chrisitian organization working on poverty and injustic in the region.

Maluit said the fire started in the expanded program on immunization room which destroyed. trapping one man.

In an interview with Sudan Tribune, James Ruach gave condolences to the bereaving family saying that “investigations are underway to find out the culprit. No suspect have been aprehended yet,” Maluit told reporters in Bor town.

An eye witness described “the flame from fuel spilling on the floor set the hospital on fire”.

“I will cancel my flight to Juba, and try to ask the state authorities and UN agencies to visit the area to inspect the level of damage and find a new strategic plan to combat the situation. Life will be difficult in the county especially for young children without the hospital since there is no access by road to Jonglei state capital of Bor town at this season of the year”, Ruach explained.

The state owned civil hospital at Pangak County was built by the government of Sudan to deliver medical services to the people of the county. The state government provides medicines and pays 67 staff who run the hospital.

    Mr. Commissioner, let there be a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of this fire that has now caused huge damages to the people of fangak, involving lost of one life.

    The problem is that you are ineffective; hence even if investigations are carried out they will not yield any substantive results. I learned a team of journalists left for the area two – three days ago, so lets wait for their findings.

    This is really a sad news because it means the people will be suffering again from small ailments that are always treated at that hospital level.

    My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and may almighty father rest his soul in eternal peace, amen.
