Jonglei: Elakadaby Company to construct hostels at Garang University

September 26, 2010 (BOR) — A team of 25 technicians working for Elakadaby Company arrived from Khartoum on 24 September, to construct hostels for students at the Dr. Garang Memorial University of Science and Technology.
Asked on the number of students to be accommodated in the hostels, Bala said “the decision is yet to be taken by SNF”, adding that the “number of students will between 200 and 300 depending on the nature of the rooms to be constructed”.
Bala pointed out that that it will take his team 45 days to finish the construction “if there is no rain.”
Elakadaby Company is expecting the construction materials to be arrive in Bor from Khartoum by cargo ship along the Nile in a day or two.
PRESIDENTIAL PLEDGES IMPLEMENTED
When President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir visited Jonglei state in March this year for his presidential campaign, he pledged his commitment to support Dr. John Garang University after cutting the curtain across the University’s main entrance.
In an interview with Sudan Tribune, Vice Chancellor of Garang Memorial University, Aggrey Ayuen Majok he confirmed that “90% of President Bashir pledges have been implemented at the University”.
“President Omar Bashir promised to support the University with vehicles after which he sent us three’, using from Unity Support Funds (USF). The President also promised to build students hostels, and now the Elakadaby Company is here,” said Aggrey.
Professor Aggrey also pointed out that the University is going to have its administrative block built by a Chinese company as planned in Khartoum, although he said “we don’t know when they will come”.
HORRIBLE, JUNGLE LIFE
Garang University students have been living in tent-hostels since the University was established three years ago, a situation which they described as a “horrible, jungle life”.
The student guild president, Thon Chol Chan welcomed the development saying it will be a big step taken by the University in improving its premises.
David Chol Manyok, one of the students in the faculty of environmental sciences said “it had been difficult for us to life in tents”, adding that, “it will remove the fear of tents being blown off by strong winds whenever it rains. It will also mark the beginning of university expansion in terms of infrastructures.”

It had been a while without hearing from you and your whereabout since we departed in Kakuma.
Sometime back before I came to Sudan, I had been hearing John Actually went back to cattle camp and to me it has a lot of interpretation ranging from herding raiding and so many more. I could not believe my ears and by seeing your article on this website my belief has become true.
And if it was true you went to the cattle camp, then welcome back to town. It would have also worked if you were still in the cattle cause you would have been apointed as a teacher for the pastoralist learners.
The step of cause gonna be great move for Dr.John garang University of Sciecne and Technology students.
It is not too late to construct the hostels although it had not been there for last three years. The good leaders are the one who keep their promises like the way Bashir did but he failed to make unity attractive since the signing of CPA. He cannot use Unity funds when time to make unity attractive has expired. However no fear still to use unity funds for they have been taking lion share in expense of our exploitation.

Ok, I’m a little confused; why not build an apartment complex that will house students from other counties whom have no relatives in Bor. Also students from out of the state can use the free housing, building a hotel in the university property will not help the students, in fact this project might cause problems in the future; we all know how students behave sometimes, students can be very violent and this is known all over the world not only in South Sudan. I hope the university and all the other parties involved in this project reconsider a different site for this very good and important project in our city.
