Governor of Unity state reshuffles ministerial posts to address gender imbalance

October 16, 2010 (BENTIU) – The Unity state governor Lt. Gen. Taban Deng Gai relieved William Daud Riek from the position of Minister of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Development although he remains the deputy governor without ministerial portfolio.

Stephen Pei Belieu was appointed the state Minister of Parliamentary affairs and Mrs. Nyachieng Biey Tuet as state advisor for Gender and Child Welfare.

The state Minister of Information and Communication Mr. Gideon Gatpan Thaor said that reshuffle was to increase the number women in the cabinet.

Under the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the former rebels the Sudan People Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) and the National Congress Party (NCP), the two sides agreed that 25% of government positions would be taken up by women.

Bringing, Tuet, the former gender and child welfare advisor into the cabinet is designed to improve the current balance, Thaor said.

The state government also hopes to fill the vacant position of parliamentary affairs, with a female candidate.

Unity state’s government said that it wants to continue to encourage women’s representation.

In January the south is due to vote on independence as part of the peace deal.

In facts, let Nuer enjoy the sweetness of the CPA. If there was really a good democracy in Unity State, then it should not be Nuer only to hold the position of Ministerial posts. Where is the position of Dinka Ruweng Community of Biemnom and Dinka Panaruu Community of Panrieng? I believe that all the people mentioned by Taban Deng Gai are all from Nuer tribe. Shame.

There is a saying said in Dinka language that “Akoon ha ye roor nook ku nah le ke ye diar ben thaal”. In Nuer language, it is said that “Guor la naak ke je wuni ke wa le ba je be thaal maani”. Anyway, let Mr.Taban Deng Gai continued with his reckless work in Unity State. There is time for everything.

We should appreciate the job well done in other states in order to aware other states who are astray to take an example from. Gentlemen, when shall we learn that ten states are not enemy to each other? Let have that mind if one state is unstable we must join hands to make it stable instead of laughing them.
If we always take what media talks about, we will never know the value of other people. Learn of what you don’t know first, before busting your comments.
