Fomer rebels deny Minnawi’s removal form SLM-MM leadership

October 23, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Minnawi denied today that it’s leader had been sacked from his position and reaffirming its commitment to the Darfur Peace Agreement signed with the Sudanese government in May 2006.

Some 29 leading members of the SLM-MM’s political wing and 33 of the groups military commanders issued two statements this week accusing Minnawi of delaying the implementation of the DPA and moving some of his troops to southern Sudan.

The statement also accused Minnawi of paralyzing the SLM-MM’s institutions, mismanaging the finances of the group and neglecting the implementation of the security arrangements which provide the integration of his military staff to the Sudanese army.

In the second statement the signatories went further alleging that the troops in southern Sudan had been imprisoned without any means of communication. Both statements gave no indication of what Minnawi’s motivation for moving the troops to the south would be.

The SLM-MM held a press conference on Saturday in Al-Fasher, capital of North Darfur state, stressing that the removal of its leader was illegal and most of the signatories of the statements denied any link with its issuance and distanced themselves from it.

Hussein Ismail Hashim, the head of the SLM-MM office in North Darfur reaffirmed the commitment of his group to the 2006 peace deal signed with the government and disclosed they will hold a meeting with their peace partner, the ruling National Congress Party, next Wednesday to tackle the implementation of the agreement.

He further added that those behind the statements had for long time not been members of the movement.

Minnawi, the former Senior Presidential Assistant, has failed to finalize the implementation of the DPA as the parties have failed to agree on the security arrangements related to the integration of the former rebels in the national army.

As head of the transitional authority Minnawi has also not been able to establish a suitable environment for the implementation of the deal on the ground with the local authorities. The newly elected governors in the region reportedly have bad relations with him and refuse to work with him.

Talks with the NCP on the participation of SLM-MM in the national and regional governments have also failed to reach an agreement.

The SLM-MM, did not take part in the general elections of April this year. The national electoral board refused to allow the participation of the former rebels because they failed to integrate his military wing in the army. However some members of the SLM-MM ran as independent candidates.

They say ” a dog bark to protect its tail” .I believe that; the purpose behind issuance of the statement of removing Minni Minnawi by those skillful opportunists is to fend off accusations and therefore escape being arrested by the regime of Khartoum after Minni took his most-ever rational decision of defecting back to the Bush. Where were these people to raise their accusations while enjoying Khartoum’s deliciouses when Minni was there? Street talks in Juba had it that; Minni refused to meet the vice President Taha during his recent visit to the South and he switched his mobile phones off; after that the regime put pressure on his groups that they are part of Minni’s plan; the act which let them issues statements to fend off Government accusations.
