In January the south, which is largely Christian with some traditional African believes, will vote on whether it wants to separate from the mainly Muslim north.

Speaking on behalf of the Churches, the Catholic Bishop of Rumbek Diocese, Caesar Mazzolari, urged the people of Southern Sudan to accept Jesus as the “real, only source of lasting peace”.

The Bishop told the congregation that the death of Jesus on the cross was for the good of humanity, adding that through the cross, Jesus broke down conflict and division, restoring unity through his body.

Bishop Mazzolari further urged the Sudanese people to desist from the temptation to take revenge and pay back evil for evil, adding that in preparation for the referendum, people need to remain obedient to the culture of Christ who advocated for the culture of peace and forgiveness.

Different Church leaders prayed during the occasion, imploring the Spirit of God upon the people of Sudan to conduct the historical referendum in peace.

The event was organized by heads of different Churches, among them, the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, Episcopal Church of Sudan (ECS), Pentecostal Church and Baptist Church.

A United Nations official at the event on Saturday, James Fandus, told Sudan Tribune that the UN will defend the rights of the Sudanese people to ensure that they take part in the forthcoming referendum in a peaceful atmosphere.

United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) is providing support for the referendum, which is way behind schedule due to political disputes between the major parties of north and south.

“The Southern Sudanese people have a right to take part in the referendum in a peaceful context “said Fandus.

He said the UNMIS team in Lakes state is involved in capacity building with local authorities charged with justice delivery together with civil society organizations to help people take part in the referendum.

He acknowledged with appreciation the commitment of government officials and Church leaders in Lakes state in fostering peace in Sudan.

South Sudan is overwhelming expected to vote for separation on 9 January 2011.

God will bless the people of Rumbek for the great job in which they are doing. Keep praying and Almighty God will understand your prayers. There are so many ways of fighting for freedom. These involved by the use of guns, spears, swords and so many ways. In addition, fighting by the use of prayers is the first significant thing we should have to use because God is the one who have the power to makes you success or makes you loss. I do really loves what they congregational people in Rumbek are doing. Please keep God in your finger-tips. Salva Kiir Miyardit will not acheived this problem, but God will make it happen.

You are right Bishop let us learn to forgive, but even Jesus Christ will not forgive your since if you didn’t confess your sins with your own tongue, usally forgiveness come after confession let the entile oppressor confess of their evils so that we should forgive.
