Expired alcohol and food set on fire in Rumbek
By Manyang Mayom
October 27, 2010 (RUMBEK) – The Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO) has disposed of 4.2 metric tons of illegal alcohol and expired goods by burning them in Rumbek, the capital of Lakes state on Tuesday.
Among the merchandise destroyed was large quanities of Ugandan Waragi, otherwise known an B-52, a strong gin illegally imported from south Sudan’s neighbor.
Despite alcohol being legal in the south – unlike north Sudan which is governed by Islamic Sharia law – B-52 has been banned be officials in Lakes state.
Malok Majak Malok, local director of SSMO, told Sudan Tribune that “there is no mercy for those who purchase the most wanted B-52 alcoholic drink – there is no warning any longer for those whom their item are confiscated by law, no compensation at all”.
Two people were arrested earlier this month for selling expired medicine in Rumbek market.
Traders complain that they have lost thousands of Sudanese pounds (SDG) after the confiscation was carried out by state authorities.
Trader Jacob Ajak Mabor, said that the Lakes state “government is carrying out random confiscation of foodstuff item[s] in this market – our businesses had broken down since no income or exchange of commodities selling inside this town”.
Authorities say that the borders of Lakes state have been put on high alert to look for out of date or illegal commodities.

Its really a curageous and good step taken by Lakes State authorities, because those expired goods and alcohol cause alot of damage and health problems to people who buy it with their own money. Such a step should also be taken in Juba and the rest of the Southern States because there are alot of stores and homes used to store such kinds of posions and they are not according to the standard and far from the government eyes. Lets encourage such steps and give it any possible support as faithful citizens to the forth coming new nation of South Sudan….

What is the morality behind the decriminalization of certain class of alcohol while at the same time legitimizing certain forms of alcohol? Alcohol is alcohol since they all contain substance that are intoxicant. My moral position as a son of the above mentioned city is that; either the government of Lakes State decriminalized or legalized all forms of liquor in Rumbek or throughout Lakes State as a whole.

Good that South Sudan Gov’t check what is expired, some traders have no business ethic they just only want money and do not care about the health of people who are thier customers.
Keep it up Lakes State.

Oh yeah, good stuff. However, drinks can be burnt but drinking can not be burnt in the hearts of the people of South Sudan. Majority of the peope drink instead of doing what’s good with their money, worse of it are their their un natural acts in the name of drunkenness.
