Sudan’s SPLM calls for campaign to promote peaceful coexistence

November 04, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – A senior official of South Sudan’s ruling party has called for an extensive campaign to promote coexistence and social peace ahead of a sensitive vote on the region’s full independence from north Sudan.

Yasir Arman, the deputy secretary-general of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), which governs south Sudan, said that his group would take part in an extensive campaign in collaboration with civil society organizations and political parties, including the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) in north Sudan, in order to promote social cohesion.

In a press release received by Sudan Tribune, Arman urged all Sudanese nationals domestically and abroad to participate in the campaign.

“We must stand together in one line against investment in hatred and planting of discord and sedition…We must repulse attempts to continue the fragmentation of national fabric and stop verbal abuse which leads to violence,” Arman said.

Arman’s statements come amid rising concerns that the January 2011 referendum on the independence of south Sudan could trigger widespread violence between citizens of the ethnically inhomogeneous north and south Sudan.

“We must defend the rights of northerners-southerners in the north and southerners-northeners in the south as the most important national wealth of our country regardless of upcoming political arrangements” Arman’s statement urged.

The referendum on south Sudan’s independence is the culmination of a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of north-south civil war which killed more than 2 million people. Southern Sudanese are widely expected to vote for secession, most observers say.

Arman denies rifts within South Sudan government

The SPLM official has also accused unnamed entities of fabricating reports of discord within the SPLM’s leadership, saying that such reports were targeting the unity of SPLM leaders.

“The campaign orchestrated by some circles depending on fabrication and interpolation in order to undermine the unity of the SPLM and its leadership did not succeed yesterday and will not succeed today” Arman said.

His statements appear to be against the background of the controversy that surrounded a recent interview between south Sudan president Salva Kiir and a journalist from the pro-government daily newspaper Al-Sudani. The journalist alleged that Kiir spoke of disagreements between him and his deputy the Vice-President of south Sudan Riek Machar.

The minister of information for the Government of Southern Sudan has since stated that his boss Kiir “was quoted out of context on a number of issues.”

Arman said that the SPLM’s leaders, whether Salva Kiir, Riek Machar or other senior figures are well aware of plots to divide them as the referendum approaches.

There are no grievance in SPLM party as a ruling party in Southern Sudan, what i know is there is confusing agents among the leaders. There are middlemen between Salva Kiir and his deputy Machar, if there could be something going on among htemselves, then they should be split long time.

All are not true, and the leaders of Southern Sudan should not consider them as a real. Our enemies are near us please

    Yasir Arman,
You are a man of great words, having learnt so much from the great hero late Dr. John Garang. You were his rightful young aspirant fighter and politician.

Keep it up. Will NCP idiots listen to your great wisdom!!!????

They are indulging themselves in cheap politics which has no basis, future, but destructive to all national co-existence and future dear relationship between north and South Sudan, which should have been a focus of day and night across the country!!

NCP and any northerner should know that South and Abyei are gone; separate State on African continent soil from CPA signature day and date. Look at all signs. Flag and Government institutions are good signs to clear any doubting Thomases!!!

If NCP wants South and North Korea way of relation, fine let them go ahead or else let the two referenda go ahead as CPA stipulates!!!

    South and Abyei Oyeeeeeeeeee!

People’s Republic of South Sudan Oyeeeee. SPLA oyee!!

Akolde, The commander of South and Abyei Liberation Movement Oyeee!

yesterday was Dr. Lual Acuek, and today is you Mr.president. when will Southern’s leaders learn the same trick the Arab’s journalists are playing on them. who do you blame when such fabrication spewed out from the same camp? is it the one who happened to do his mandated job of manipulating things or the one who allow himself to be entice by the same deceptors he knows at the get go.
Besides, i think the president’s secretary should be fired though he happened to be kin-mate.
