SPLM, NCP resume post-referendum talks in Khartoum

November 8, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – Officials from the NCP of north Sudan and the SPLM of south Sudan on Monday resumed talks aimed at thrashing out a host of issues concerning post-referendum arrangements and the contested central area of Abyei.

Sudan Tribune has learned that the talks are being held at the headquarters of the Council of Ministers in Khartoum, and that no journalists have been allowed to cover them.

Sudan is due to hold a crucial referendum vote in January 2011 on whether the semi-autonomous region of south Sudan, whose population is predominantly Christian or follows tradition beliefs, should secede from the Muslim-Arab dominated north.

Most analysts expect southerners to vote overwhelmingly for full independence of the north.

The two sides have many issues on their plate, most importantly the issues of citizenship, foreign debts, oil revenues and demarcation of north-south borders if south Sudan decides to secede.

Another major point of contention is the oil-producing area of Abyei, where another referendum is supposed to take place also in January 2011 to decide whether the area should stay in the north or join the south in the event of its secession.

But Abyei referendum is increasingly becoming a remote possibility as preparations for the vote have yet to begin and disagreements persist between north and south Sudan over who can vote in the plebiscite.

The SPLM and the NCP are due to hold a fresh round of talks on Abyei in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa next week. Last month’s round of Abyei talks in Addis Ababa failed to yield an agreement.

    Dear readers,

I am surprised that the NCP former spy Gosh and SPLA Pagan Amum refuse their talks to be covered by journalists. This will raise suspicions about what will be agreed by the two parties.

The post-referendum issues are a public concern and the public should not be left in the dark about them. Why not discuss them openly so that the public knows where the disagreement is and where the two parties are agreeing?

Are the two parties going for secret deals?

This is a dangerous scenario because very soon the NCP will run to the media and expose IN ITS OWN INTERPRETATION what they have agreed.

Now, Bashir has appointed Salva Kiir to be his deputy in the rally in support for unity of the country. Now Pagan Amum accepts that the discussions should not be covered by the media. What is going on guys?

Invite your trusted media from both NCP and SPLM to cover it for the public. Transparency is important and should only be said and not done.
