Arab militiamen join SLM rebels in North Darfur
November 9, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Darfur’s rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) said today that a group of Arab militia has joined their ranks after denouncing government policy to divide Darfurians.
A group of former Arab militia group led by Deifalla Abdel Rahim has defected from the government army and merged with Sudan Liberation Movement/Army led by Abdel Wahid Al-Nur.
The agreement was signed Monday in Frtini, eastern Kabakbiya, North Darfur said Nimir Abdel-Rahman, SLA spokesperson. “Talks with the group lasted for more than a week,” he told Sudan Tribune.
Khartoum mobilized proxy Arab militia to help quell the revolt of Darfur rebels who took up arms against the government in February 2003.
The Arab militia known locally as Janjaweed, pillaged and burned villages and killed civilians. The Sudanese government has called the Janjaweed outlaws and denied supporting them.
“They joined our group because they believe we have a right cause and struggle for justice and citizenship rights,” Nimir said.
He disclosed that the two parties agreed to address a joint message to all the Arab militia groups to distance themselves from the government policy in the restive region.
“The government recruited the Arabs and directed them to attack the civilians not the rebel groups while the rebels avoided to attack their villages,” said Nimer. “Deifalla underlined this point,” he added.
In November 2007, a group of Arab militiamen led by Al-Nur Ahmed had joined the SLM-AW but the group reintegrated the government forces several months later after a mediation brokered by North Darfur Governor Osman Mohamed Yousef Kibir. The militiamen received financial compensations, and a new district “Al-Waha” or the Oasis is established for them.
Last September, the same Al-Nur Ahmed killed over 50 persons in an attack on Tabra, inhabited by farmers who cultivate the fertile area in Jebel Marra, located in North Darfur state at 12 kilometers from Tawila and 75 kilometers from the state capital Al-Fasher.

I congratulate the Arab militia group for defecting from government forces and join SLM/A leadership. It is good that you now know the effects of intense marginalization and the reaction of the victims towards it.
Although is too late for you to understand your brothers policy in Khartoum, you are still being welcome by the SLM- thanks to Wahid Al Nur policy of inclusiveness. This is true forgiveness, not fake like the ones of your brothers in Khartoum.
I urge all to join together with other rebel groups in the north under one umbrella and march directly into Khartoum and let those Khartoumers shallow the taste of a gun bullet.
I once again congratulate you for your courageousness and wise decision. Others who are still wondering around suit now wait but follow suit immediately. Khartoum is now yours after the South Separate; if you don’t take it is upto you. You will remain as slaves for the rest of your lives and from generation to generation. But what does life worth if you are a slave in your own country? Do you really want to be in relationship of master and slave? It is upto you to examine and answer these questions for yourselves.
Blessings.

Careful assessment need be made in light of this diversion. SLM leadership should ask themselves as to why the militias would join them at this critical juncture of the Southern referendum!
I personally think that this move is a calculated move by the NCP strategists like Osman Taha and few others. After realizing that they have messed up the entire nation. Now they want to use the militias for the purposes of collecting intelligence and so forth in order to later destroy the SLM. In essence, this is what we call counter-insurgency strategy. Its a military strategy mostly used in US military where they recruit insurgents to fight insurgents. They do this because the insurgents themselves have good knowledge of the terrains and all other relevant information that can help them fight accurately with success.
I think the NCP is preparing to conclude the fight in Darfur so that they can redeploy their army in the Southern border. That is why they have intensified the war with JEM and now employing the counter-strategy with SLM.
Bearing this in mind, the SLM must watch these militias very closely. Watch every move carefully and abstain from unnecessary disclosure of your military documents. For they will use them against you.

Yeah, this is a right track men! The Arabs of Darfur have been a social fabric of Darfur hundreds of years ago. No one in Darfur could claim that he is a Fur, Arab, Masalit..etc, hundred percent, people of Darfur are all looking alike like our brothers in South Sudan or other parts of the margin. conflicts were there is Darfur long ago but has never been of ethnic or color line conflicts. I will give an example of Such conflicts; a young man or a woman from cattle herding families neglected the animal to enter in someones’farm; in th such case the elders evalued the damages of the farm and the farm owner compenciated. The young men from the families of the farmers were wondering in the valey or elsewhere and they found a lost animal then they slaughter it; when the owner of the animal appear then the elders sit and evalued the damage and the owners of the animal compenciated. Not only that but some Fur tribes men or Arab tribesmen becomes Arab by just being cattle herders and getting marriage from the nomadic tribes and the vice versa. Such above examples not only exists in Darfur but everyhwere in the margins of Sudan.
The Islamist because they know very well that they are not popular in Sudan, so the only policies to follow was the po;lices of their colonial master of divide and rule. They pushed people of South Sudan with their own black brothers, and people of Darfur with their sisters sons. I think the step of Darfur Arabs joining their uncles against rootless Northern Islamist elites who sometime say they are Turkish origins and some sometimes that they are of English origins is in fact a great step to be applauded. I must say also that SPLM/A you are a poineer on uniting people from their differences, I am sure that people of Darfur also must have learned some tactics from you.
