Japan Center for Conflict Prevention (JCCP) and Confident Children out of Conflict (CCC) hold Children’s Arts and Craft Exhibition in Juba
Juba, Southern Sudan, 10 November, 2010 – Arts and Crafts Exhibition composed of Children’s work will be held from 12th to 14th November 2010 at Roots Project in Juba, Southern Sudan. The exhibition is a collection of art pieces created by children and youths living on the streets and in the community of Juba around Konyo Konyo market.
These children and youths are often labeled as trouble makers by the society. JCCP has been working with these individuals to restore autonomy and enabling them to have aspirations for their future through awareness raising activities in the areas of crime prevention, health education, prevention of substance abuse and sexual abuse. Some of these youths have also benefited from vocational training also offered by JCCP.
The art activities are a part of a consolidated effort to secure a hopeful future for these children and youths. “Clay modeling is good for development of the brain in children and in healing of traumatized children. Moreover, the participation in the activity keeps them occupied with something meaningful. We may discover talented artist among the participating children through coaching,” said Benneth Morris, Art Instructor, JCCP.
“Through participation in JCCP activity, I learned the importance of togetherness, not to fight and to respect one another whether big or small. I need education to improve my skills,” said Steven Lokibor (age 14), street child from Eastern Equatoria State.
“I appreciate what JCCP has done for me. I became more creative. I am here (in Juba) to look for money so that I can go to school, although the life on the street is hard,” said Thomas Lowi (age 15), street child from Eastern Equatoria State.
“Participation in the activity gave them a chance to express their hopes as well as their concerns. It also helped them gain confidence in themselves. The Exhibition is organized to show to the general public what these children can do when given the opportunity and trust,” said Mie Nakanishi, Representative of JCCP in Sudan.
An opening ceremony will be held from 10:00am to 12:00pm on Friday 12th November 2010. The exhibition will be open to public from 12:00pm to 5:00pm on Friday 12th November and from 10:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th November. The exhibition will be held at Roots Project (orange building with thatched roof), behind Juba Basketball Stadium in Hai Nimra Talata, Juba. There will be presentations and demonstrations by the children and sale of traditional stoves during the event.

The organization conducts awareness raising activities and vocational training for vulnerable children and youths (homeless, orphans, internally displaced persons, and returnees) living in harsh conditions in Juba.
