South Sudan minister calls on teachers to collaborate

November 12, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Michael Milly Hussein, Southern Sudan minister of general education on Friday called for an effective collaboration, between teachers in primary schools and their counterparts in High Schools, to improve the poor academic standards in the communities.

Addressing a week long inspectorate workshop held at South Sudan Hotel in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, the minister urged teachers to embark on skills and knowledge transfer training programmes and that primary school teachers work hard to produce better students for high schools.

“Primary school teachers should work hard enough to produce better students for the high school, so that teachers at that level would not encounter many problems in handling and preparing them for their Basic Education Certificate Examination”, he said.

The annual inspectorate meeting attended by senior class teachers and school principals focused much on studies and the performance of their schools during the academic year.

The meeting also deliberated on problems facing teachers and students, to enable them to strategize and find solutions for better educational standards in the schools.

The forum also expressed concern about the lateness of some primary school teachers to schools and called on the head teachers to effectively supervise their teachers to redouble their efforts and urged parents to monitor the movements and activities of their children and also ensure that they learn at home to complement the efforts of teachers.

Majak Manyiel, an auxiliary facilitator, told Sudan Tribune that others recommended that teacher put more efforts on teaching simplified texts.

This, he said, would enable them to prepare adequately for their final-year examinations and cautioned teachers against lateness, absenteeism and apathy, since such negative practices affect productivity.

He called on parents to support the teachers to promote discipline in the schools and organize a special quiz competition for basic schools in the area, to enhance the learning capabilities of the school children..
