Officials from referendum commission arrested in Sudan’s W. Equatoria

November 15, 2010 (RUMBEK) – Six officials at the local referendum commission office plus two chiefs of Makundi payam (ward) in Wulu County of Lakes state were arrested on Sunday night by Western Equatoria state over a dispute on registration centers for south Sudan’s independence vote.

The arrests ordered by the county commissioner of Mavolo in Western Equatoria state have caused confusion over where the border between the two southern states lies.

Paul Nuer Tier, county commissioner of Mavolo has been quoted as saying that he arrested the staff because their voter registration centers were in fact across the state border in Western Equatoria.

Makundi has been shared by both states since a peace deal between north and south Sudan in 2005. The referendum officials were later released but a day of registration has been lost.

Wulu county commissioner Gideon Shilur, said “I have talk[ed] to my counterpart to release them and he accepted my call – now those people arrested are released to come back to Wulu county but we have missed one day for voter registration.”

William Koji Kerjok, a head of Wulu county voter registration team leader said that two of the three voter registration centers have been forced to close due to the arrests.

These two centers missed the first day of voter registration but the other center is continuing its duties Kerjok said.

Kerjok affirmed that “there is no work today in two centers of Makundi payam of Wulu County – our voter registration staffs were arrested in Mavolo for confusion over border between two counties of Wulu and Mavolo.”

This is quite typical of people who want to fail an important exercise. It speaks volumes about what is in the minds of the people of Western Equatoria and their State government.

I don’t think they are looking forward to the independence of Southern Sudan. The rest of the independence-loving people must watch them carefully.
