Referendum registration process is interrupted by cattle raiders in Warrap state

By Manyang Mayom

November 18, 2010 (RUMBEK) – The registration process for south Sudan’s independence referendum has been interrupted by cattle raiders in Tonj East County in Warrap State.

The attacks, which occurred from 13 – 15 November have left many people from Alongdior village of Makuach Payam afraid to turn up registration centers due to the insecurity and threat further raids.

According to county commissioner, John Mayiik Bath Geng, the cattle raiders were young cattle keepers from Mayendit county in Unity state.

Mayiik told Sudan Tribune, “I would like to inform the government of Warrap state and the South Sudan government that there is rampant insecurity […] from 13 to 15 that interrupted referendum registration – there were arm groups attacking civilians – those arm group were confirm to be from unity state.”

The commissioner said that one of the attackers was killed and another was captured during an exchange of fire with local authorities. The capture man is being held at the police headquarters in Warrap state.

Some of the looted cows were recovered by youth from Warrap after a gun fight with the youth from Unity state, according to Mayik.

He appealed to government of Southern Sudan and Unity state government to cooperate to ensure that such incidents do not interrupt registration.

South Sudan is widely expected to vote for independence in January’s poll, which was agreed as part of a 2005 peace deal between north and south.

There are no exceptional circumstances justifying this people criminality in Warrap State. It is time to Charge this criminal or for Kiir to send in the army. There are no difference between them an the NCP. They are against peace and freedom……What choices do they have? Nothing I supposed and it can be ascertain they dont deserve freedom they wishes.

GoSS has to step in and prove itself that is more powerful than those illiterate civilians otherwise it will counted as another example of being unable to govern the south.

South Sudanese should leave the premitive ways of keeping cattle for heritage but for commercial purpose only. All the cattle keepers think about the lives you guys are loosing and the news people are getting around world tells that South Sudanese cannot rule themselves. I know most of cattle raiders want to increase the size of their herds and to get married. Why can marriages be for love and the cattle be for food?

    Dear readers,

It is a shame that some people find pride in the culture of lying and shifting blames to other communities. When did Warrap state become free from cattle looters from within. Have they not fighting themselves since 2005 as we read in the news?

Those of Warrap should stop lying every time their own sections attack each other they blame it on Unity state. Stop that culture of lying, okay?

The so-called commissioner of Tonj should be warned not to just find a citizen of Unity state in his town and arrest him as a fake proof. That will not be okay.

Now the reporter is equally confused. Do you know the difference between “armed groups and youth cattle raiders?” Which one is which in your report.

Please, lying for decades will not help you. Learn to tell the truth that you have your own problems between Apuk, Gok and whatever.

Be like those of Lakes state who tell the truth when their own communities loot one another.
