Unknown gunmen kill six workers in Sudan’s Unity state
November 18, 2010 (BENTIU) – Six employees from the Unity state’s ministry of Education, Science and Technology were killed during an ambush by armed men on their way back from Koch County on Tuesday.
Lumba Mut Guong, an accountant who was injured during the attack, spoke to Sudan Tribune at Bentiu hospital, confirming the incident and added that the bandits fired bullets indiscriminately.
Guong said that before they took off from the county’s headquarters, about one kilometer from the town center, the group attacked them killing six and seriously wounding five including himself as he sustained injuries to his hand. They were in the process of delivering teachers’ salaries of Mayiendit, Leer and Payinjiar County.
Today, the state authorities organized a prayer, and buried six accountants at a mass grave in Bentiu town.
Some 35 people were killed in a series of attacks in the area since last April’s elections. The local population widely alleges that the gunmen belong to a militia headed by General Gatluak Gai, who rebelled after contesting the outcome of the “rigged elections”.
However, the state authorities declined to endorse such claims.
The Bentiu government condemned the attack and termed it as “criminal act” hindering civilians movement and referendum registration in Koch County. Unity state also called for calm among the families of the victims.
The bandits ran away with the money transported by the accountants but the amount is not yet known. Investigations are still underway, said the state Minister of Information and Communication in Unity State.

Despite its huge money resources, commercial banks continue to report that Unity is the least banked state? Why? If this continues, the 2% money from the oil will continue to go in the pockets of the “bandits”. Go modern, pay your salaries thru bank accounts!!
