Machar asks South Sudan rebels to lay down arms ahead of referendum

By Bonifacio Taban Kuich

November 22, 2010 (BENTIU) – The Vice president of the government Southern Sudan, Riek Machar Teny, has urged all eligible voters to get register for the upcoming referendum on the possible independence of South Sudan.

Machar said the vote each one person would not just be for them but for future generations of southern Sudanese.

In January the south will vote on whether it wants to split from the north as part of a 2005 peace deal that ended over two decades of war between north and south.

Vice President Machar called upon the sons and daughters of unity State to come together and fights for the secession of an independent of South Sudan, leaving behind the grievances of last April general elections results.

Angelina Teny – Machar’s wife – failed to win the governorship of Unity state in the elections losing to the official candidate from south Sudan’s ruling part the SPLM.

After the acrimonious vote, Gatluak Gai, began a rebellion in Unity state, which it has been reported the Government of Southern Sudan was backed by Teny.

A report by the Small Arms Survey say that: ‘While Gatluak and his forces have not launched fresh attacks in Unity since June 2010, the area of the state where he initially operated continues to be insecure and the situation will likely remain unstable in the run-up to the referendum.’

On his visit Machar warned those who had carry out attacks in Koch county to surrenders their arms and begin a fresh relationship with the state government so as to conducts a smoothly registration process.

While speaking during the occasion in Naivasha freedom square Teny called upon all state citizens to forget the results of April elections and asked her supporters to reunited with state government to face the challenges of the referendum and possible independence.

Machar said, the citizens of Unity state must register and choose how to vote wisely.

Unity state Governor Taban Deng Gai welcomed Machar’s calls to bring Southern Sudanese factions in the state together before voting begins on January 9, 2011. Registration for the vote runs from November 15 to December 1.

the act of violence will never bring us salvation or satisfactory. we need to think beyond revenge ideology and be more teleological thinkers. It is time to think about the outcome and consequences before taking any action.

You know, Riak Machar, those rebel groups have terribly missed your ‘muoc rotdu’ government where everyone was kuermidit. Because this reason we need 1000 governors to lead Unity state successfully.
