Sudan’s SPLM frees senior NCP figure who campaigned for unity: state media

November 23, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – A senior official from the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) returned to the Sudanese capital on Tuesday after allegedly being held by the authorities of South Sudan since last Saturday, according to Sudan’s official news agency (SUNA).

Deputy head of the NCP's Youth sector Zuhair Hamed Suleiman (Al-Ahram Al-Youm newspaper)

The deputy head of the NCP’s Youth sector Zuhair Hamed Suleiman was quoted by SUNA as saying that his delegation discovered blatant violations that marred the voter registration process in the South particularly in polling stations where there is low turnout.

Suleiman was reportedly taken into custody when he was heading from Juba to Bor as part of the NCP’s campaign for unity in the South. He said that he suffered bruises that were documented by a physician in Juba hospital and that the medical report was provided to the European Union (EU) observer mission for referendum.

The oil-producing south is 48 days away from the scheduled start of a plebiscite on whether to declare independence or stay in Sudan — a politically sensitive vote promised in a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of north-south civil war.

Southerners who are eligible to vote began registering since last week inside the country and abroad although with some delays internationally. The NCP accused the Southern ruling party of intimidating voters in the North so it can guarantee a vote for independence. The SPLM on the other hand claimed that NCP is terrorizing Southerners in the capital so that they register and vote for unity later.

The Sudanese presidential adviser for security affairs Salah Gosh who met Suleiman at the airport called on the SPLM to stop its policy of suppressing freedoms and allow Southerners to express their views without fear.

Gosh was quoted by SUNA as saying that the incident reveal that SPLM’s slogans of democratic transformation are false.

The NCP has threatened that unless registration violations are rectified they will not recognize the referendum outcome.

That’s a complete lies. And the Khartoum’s government should know that, theirs dirty tactics are not gonna bear fruits at all. And its should be crystal clear that, anyone living right now in Juba or in the entire Southern Sudan region is there as a trader or refugee.

Hey, NCP is fabricating things to claim that the votes were rigged. How come that Mr. Zuhair Hamed Suleiman was arrested as claimed by you. This man had not been in the South at first place. NCP had hidden him in the North to claim his arrest while He never set foot on South Sudan soil. Let NCP give me these details, when was He travelling to the South? Which plane was He using? What location was he arrested in, mention the date, people which where travelling with him, which security agency that arrested him? Mind you also that NISS is present in the South and they are being instructed from the North. They have the capability to execute such an arrest and their newspaper will say it is SPLM. Answering all those questions will reveal in reality whether this guy was truely present in the South or not. NCP has realised that the games is against them and that is why they are making it wholeheartedly impossible for the SSRC to hold the referendum on time, this is by saying so many agitating factors to eliminate the process, hence, bring in avenues for war which we as Southerners don’t want but if we are push against the wall we will try defending our rights. NCP at first was talking about border demarcation while they were the one delaying it, they talk of post referendum issues which would have been discussed earlier, now they are shouting about Southerners that had bycotted the registration which is their individual rights to exercise, nobody can claim to be the gurdian of any person that has refused to register. What is the uproar about here?

Zuhair Hamed and his uncle head of NCP should have done something during those six years to attract Southern Sudanese for unity but instead NCP kept angering Southerners by keeping the capital city of Sudan under Sharia on the basis that Khartoum the capital of Sudan lies in the North and should be under their Islamic laws.

How would you expect Southerners to vote for unity with part of the country that does not recognize their rights and belief? Would you expect Southerners to vote for a united Sudan where they would be governed by Islamic laws and at the same time call Sudan an Arabic Country? Hell, no, no Southerners in their sound minds would do that. Unity on these basis is like committing suicide and we are not going to commit suicide.

The fact that NCP and the other Northern parties didn’t do anything to attract unity with southerners during the past six years was an indication that they had seen South Sudan as an obstacle for their Arabic and Islamic identity and that the best way out is to let them go. We too are happy to go and this will give Northerners a chance to form THE ARABIC ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF NORTHERN SUDAN.

For some good Northerners who like Sudan unity based on recognition of all its citizens regardless of their religion and ethnicity, I am sure you would not blame Southerners for the break down of the country but policy makers in Khartoum since 1956 or I can better say since 1955 when Northerners excluded Southerners from ruling their country together as they agreed upon during the 1947 Juba Conference. If you can’t be just to people, there will be nothing that will let people love you or be near you. Good luck with the rest of the country that are also in discontent with your ways of governance.

In conclusion, Zuhair Hamed and those who are sending him to the South at this time do not do that so as to convince Southerners for unity in fact, they are doing that for political view. This is only to say at the end, they tried to campaign for unity but Southerners didn’t want unity but that is all bullshits. We will be united in fifty years to come if you people have chosen to be Sudanese in the first place and keep your religion in the mosque and your Arabism for yourselves and not mingle it in the politics of the country.
