Darfur groups to announce a new alliance within two days – rebel
November 25, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Darfur rebel groups will establish a new alliance before to resume peace talks with the Sudanese government, said a breakaway leader of the rebel Liberation and Justice Movement today.
“We are set to sign a political charter for the resistance forces in Darfur within two days,” said Mahgoub Hussein, a former deputy of the LJM chairman. He further said that this new coalition will include besides his faction, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and other rebel groups.
Talks in Doha between government and LJM rebels are expected to be concluded next month as the mediation seeks to reach a compromise over the remaining divergences particularly le power sharing file.
Also a delegation from JEM ended today in Doha a second round of talks with the mediation over the conditions of the resumption of talks with the Sudanese government as they have frozen their participation in the peace process since May.
At the time, JEM rebels accused the Sudan Armed Forces of breaching a truce signed in February with Khartoum. Also the rebel group rejected separate talks with LJM accusing the host country of favoring the Sudanese government.
Mahgoub further told Sudan Tribune that talks with the government in Doha will be only conducted by the rebel groups members of the forthcoming alliance “which is considered the only legitimate representative for the people of Darfur”.
The leader of new LJM splinter faction criticized LJM Chairman El-Tigani El-Sissi stressing that they would not recognize the efforts of the latter to reach a peace deal with the government to end the seven year conflict in Darfur.
Mahgoub further said Libya is supporting his group and called upon the Sudanese forces to join the new alliance.
The Chief mediator Djibril Bassolé flanked by the Qatari state minister for foreign affairs will arrive in Sudan on Friday to meet civil society organizations in the three states of Darfur before to hold talks with President Omer Al-Bashir and other Sudanese officials on a peace agreement to be signed next month in Doha.
