W. Equatoria state Governor spearheads referendum campaign in greater Mundri

November 27, 2010 (MUNDRI) – The governor of Western Equatoria state Col Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro has finished a four day voter registration campaign in the three greater Mundri counties in the west of the southern state. The tour began on November 23 and ended in Mvolo county on Saturday November 27.

As part of a 2005 peace deal South Sudan will vote in January to decide whether it will secede from the north.

Addressing the communities of greater Mundri counties, Bakosoro said, “my trip was to give words of thanks for the communities for their trust they had in me during the elections which has brought me as your governor to sensitize my communities about the referendum which is only hope for Southerners.”

The governor called upon the citizens of greater Mundri to reconcile amongst themselves and join hands with the state government in preparation for the referendum.

Voter registration began on November 15 and was recently extended to end on December 8, only one month before voting begins.

Governor Bakosoro urged all eligible voters “to turn up for the registration and must vote during the referendum for Separation for the attainment of a free and independent southern Sudan in Jan 9th 2010.”

Regarding the concerns of the communities towards infrastructure, the governor said “basic infrastructure services will be put in place more specially roads, health and education centers in all the counties of the state.

“The SPLM is committed with all the Southern political parties for the conduct of a peaceful and transparent referendum on the 9th Jan 2011”, he told the crowds.

After the referendum Bakosoro said that the people of greater Mundri would “have enough food in order to curb hunger from the state.”

Youth groups in greater Mundri reiterated their position to vote for the total separation of Southern Sudan. A massive campaign for the separation has been carried out in greater Mundri counties with the help of the “My Referendum for Freedom” campaign group, which is also operating in all the ten counties of Western Equatoria.

The governor’s tour covered most of the Payams and Bomas of the three Counties of greater Mundri: Mvolo, Mundri West and Mundri East.
