Sudan to adopt new policy towards European countries seeking to subdue it, minister

November 30, 2010 (KHARTTOUM) – Sudan foreign minister Ali Karti announced on Tuesday that Sudan will craft a new policy for dealing with European countries seeking to pressurize Sudan into executing certain agendas, state media has reported.

Karti told reporters at the presidential palace in Khartoum yesterday that he had met with president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir and agreed with him to categorize European countries that attempt to exert influence on Sudan and deal with them in the same manner they deal with Sudan and its leadership.

The announcement comes after president Al-Bashir was forced to cancel his trip to attend the Euro-Africa in Tripoli on November 28 after the host country Libya asked him to do so under pressure from Western countries who threatened to walk out if Al-Bashir showed up.

President Al-Bashir is under indictment by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide allegedly committed in Sudan’s westernmost region of Darfur. The charges are linked to atrocities committed by government forces and its allied militias in a counterinsurgency campaign against rebels who rose up against the central government in 2003.

Karti was quoted by the official news agency SUNA as criticizing the “hypocritical manner” in which some European countries deal with Sudan, adding that “the same president sought by the ICC is the president to which European countries send their ambassadors to be accredited and the same president they ask to implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement”

Immediately after the first arrest warrant for Al-Bashir was issued in March 2008, Sudan expelled a group of prominent Western NGOs, accusing them of spying for the ICC.

The cancellation of Al-Bashir trip was announced by Karti himself on Monday after he walked out of the ministerial-level meeting of the summit. Halfway into the meeting he received instructions to head back home.

“Bashir will not attend” Karti said afterward. “We are therefore pulling out and will not be represented at any level,” he told reporters.

The minister, who walked out of the closed-door meeting after announcing Khartoum’s decision, added that Bashir’s no-show was “to avoid embarrassment to Libya,” which is hosting the gathering of 80 nations

Sudan responded furiously to the cancellation of Al-Bashir visit, and issued a scathing statement criticizing the hypocrisy of European countries.

“Sudan considers the EU position on the president’s participation in this summit as representative of the colonial mentality with which Europe still views Africa. Europe’s stance was “an attack on the African Union and Sudan while also undermining the idea of real dialogue and cooperation between Africa and Europe”.

The ICC’s arrest warrants have greatly limited Al-Bashir’s range of movement and caused diplomatic embarrassment in more than one occasion.

A similar incident occurred last year when France decided to move the France-Africa summit from Egypt to prevent the Sudanese leader from attending. Cairo had insisted on allowing Bashir to take part.

    Ali Karti,
Keep on barking like mad dog sir,you right that the same person who committed genocide in Dafur and the same person pretended to be leader, CPA got nothing to do with Al Bashir crimes he did,so what are you going to do with European community? Any body who is charged with any offense is treated as innocent till he/she appear before the court of law. why did/do he not go and proof himself as innocent leader? Bashir is double dealer,he is vampire “blood sucker” and at the same pretend to president of sudan. CPA was signed 2005 and Al Bashir has been doing his job for killing ,raping maiming, torturing and abducting civilians since he took power thru millitary coup,1989.

    Harvest what you had planted,
    Thank you,

Big shame on President, what kind of policy being adopt toward European Nations by Sudan,
In the way of by logical reason how Sudan need to deal with democratics leaders while Mr President was accused for killing his own people ,no way to escape from this Crime is Crime you will face the consequences,
But I don,t Mr Jean Ping chairman of A-U how is sympathizing toward his friend Omer Hassan el Bashir as African leaders are very inferior to Arab Leaders within the African Union and its very obvious

Ali Karti,he is among the group which are suppose to be arrested after Bashir, that why he moved out of the meeting hall because he guess if not Bashir, will begin with him, they knows themselves as the culprits.Don’t generalised Sudan, what will Khartoum do to EU?that why in my previous comment i said all those who used to call themselves under the NCP leadership are run out of sense, the sensitivity which used to collection information through the habulangata lost so many memories which always make them to talk like mad people and all these root cause about the South Sudan independence which scheduled on January 9 2011.And so i can’t see something importance for the Sudan absent in the submit to else with them according to EU but painful for AU the supporter.BY OBOL SAM KING COLLEGE LONDON
