Scores killed in Sudan road accident
December 4, 2010 (WASHINGTON) – Nineteen people were killed and 16 injured at a road accident that took place South of the capital.
Sudan official news agency (SUNA) quoted deputy director of highways Brigadier-General Al-Shazli Mohammed Saeed as saying that the accident occurred when the bus driver attempted to overtake a vehicle in front of him.
The bus collided with a minibus coming from the other direction, he said.
All 16 passengers aboard the minibus and three on the bus — including the driver and his assistant — died in the accident on the road between Khartoum and the city of Kosti.
Road accidents are common in Sudan, where authorities have banned buses and minibuses from some of the main roads at night in an effort to minimize collisions and casualties.
Last September, 37 people were killed and 26 injured in a head-on collision between two buses south of Khartoum.
