Sudan’s Unity state county expects all voters to choose secession

December 5, 2010 (BENTIU-PAYINJIAR) – Payinjiar County Commissioner Colonel. Peter Gai Joak said Sunday that he expects all voters who have registered for the south’s self determination referendum in January will chose secession.
The plebiscite agreed as port of a 2005 peace deal between the north and south after over two decades of conflict.
Commissioner Joak urged young people, women and elderly to participate fully during the January 9, 2011 Southern Sudan referendum saying that with two days until registration ends on December 8, 32,000 people have registered in Payinjiar County.
The commissioner was speaking at a conference for young people, women and the elderly to share their problems which include cattle rustling and conflict among youths.
Colonel Peter Gai Joak told Sudan Tribune on Sunday that the three day conference is aimed at orienting the youths in the county towards adopting a better life.
The conference to build peace, reconciliation and justice, and was organized by Vision of Community Development (VCD) which was funded by FACT Sudan. Particpants were from the nine payams that made up Payinjiar County.
Jaok said that the participants came up with the resolutions to bring to an end all these internal pressure that had made the life difficult among the people of Payinjiar County.
1. Collaborate together to respond to any problem arising in a particular area.
2. Hold local leaders and elders in the affected areas to account should they not respond in time to prevent any arising conflict.
3. Encourage equal enrolment of both boys and girls to school and never allow men to marry girls below 18 years of age.
4. Mobilize youth and create awareness to discourage harmful traditional acts including initiations that include cutting the foreheads of boys.
5. Support any legal action taken against anybody or group found to be engaged in criminal activities.
The commissioner called for the youths to unite ahead of the referendum. He promised citizens to create a peaceful environment for the exercise.
